CHALLENGE Firearms were previously located in three different storage areas throughoutthemuseumbuilding,makingitdifficulttokeepsafewatchoverthevaluableinventory. Museumcurator,JamesRobertswantedtodevelopastorageapproachthatfocusedonthelong- termwell-being of the collection by consolidating the storage areas. SOLUTION High-density mobile storage was employed throughout a new temperatureandhumiditycontrolledroomwithenhancedsecurity,consolidating26,000sq. ft. of storageintoapproximately10,000sq. ft..Thenewstorageareabroughtmorethan60%space savings,andreducedcubicspaceofrenovationandtheongoingutilitycosts,apotentialsavingsof nearly $1 million as compared to new construction. A variety of storage solutions were employed to provide safe storage of weapons: - Upright storage of long-armweapons utilizes a “T” bar solution andmaximizes use of vertical space. Beneath, openflat shelvingprovides safestorageof bulkymachineguns. - Uniqueslatwall-stylesolutionsprovidehorizontalstorageofextralongwallguns,pikes and swivel guns. Below, protective drawers house additional edge weapons. - A third area incorporates wide span shelving for extra large bulky items. - Lastly, gasket sealed museum cabinets with pull out trays store machine guns and smaller weapons. “ We looked at many options before making our selection, but most options had too many exposed areas that could cause potential harm from vibration,” explained Roberts. “The custom-designed “T”bar solution offered a low-cost innovation that was far superior to the other products we evaluated.” “The ASAmember has been wonderful to work with and very responsive to our needs,”stated Roberts. “They collaboratedwith us to find the exact array of products and customfabrication to meet our storage requirements.”
