Graduation Program 2025

About the College Lawson State Community College traces its origin to October 9, 1947, when the Wallace-Patterson Trade School Act authorized the creation of a trade school in Jefferson County. As a result, Wenonah State Technical Institute was organized in 1949 and opened in 1950 with eleven instructors and seventy-five students in ten courses and one related subject. The first president was Dr. Theodore A. Lawson. The initial funding received by the technical division was $75,000. Wenonah State Junior College was authorized under Act No. 93 of the 1963 Alabama State Legislature, and officially opened in 1965. Dr. Lawson served as president of the College and the Technical Institute. In 1967, Wenonah State Junior College held its first commencement exercise with thirty-three graduates. In 1968, the College reached another milestone when it received accreditation by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In 1969, the State Legislature approved naming the junior college in honor of Dr. Lawson, at which time there were three hundred students enrolled. On October 1, 1973, Wenonah State Technical Institute merged with Lawson State Junior College to become a comprehensive community college. Lawson State Community College has only had five presidents: Dr. Theodore A. Lawson, 1949 – 1971; Dr. Leon Kennedy, 1971-1978; Dr. Jesse J. Lewis, 1978-1987; Dr. Perry W. Ward, 1987-2020 and Dr. Cynthia T. Anthony since 2021. Bessemer State Technical College was created under legislative Act No. 93 of the 1963 Alabama legislature. The City of Bessemer purchased 34 acres for the college site. Bessemer State accepted its first students on April 4, 1966, with six programs of study, 47 daytime students and 30 night students. The college was initially known as the State Vocational-Technical School but the first official name was the John R. Pelham Technical Trade School. The name was changed later to Bessemer State Trade School. On August 16, 1966, the name was again changed by legislative act to Bessemer State Technical Institute. In 1973, the college achieved accreditation by the Commission on Occupational Education Institutions of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and received the designation of “college”. Five presidents served Bessemer State Technical College: Otto B. Smith, 1964-1967; S. C. Porch, 1967-1971; Euel Snider, 1971-1972; Charles L. Payne, 1972-1984; and Dr. W. Michael Bailey, 1984-2004. On January 27, 2005, the Alabama State Board of Education adopted the Statement of Intent to merge Lawson State Community College and Bessemer State Technical College, to form one institution. As of July 1, 2005, Bessemer State Technical College merged with Lawson State Community College. The Birmingham and Bessemer Campuses of Lawson State Community College are situated nine miles apart in the southwestern area of Jefferson County, both providing a robust and comprehensive array of courses, programs, and services. Under the merged college, Lawson State has seen its most celebrated years. In 2011, the College was featured as a Top 50 Community College, making history in the state. Within the same year, the College recognized by the White House (and celebrated by the Obama Administration) as a Champion of Change . In 2013, the College moved from number 33 out of 50 on the list (of top colleges) to number five. In March of 2015, Lawson State received the epitome of recognition when it was selected to host a visit from President Barack Obama. In 2019, Lawson State opened its newest building – the Academic Success Center. In 2024, the College completed the renovation of four instructional buildings and continues to upgrade facilities to enhance the teaching and learning environment to support student success.

Academic Honors

Candidates who maintain high scholarships are graduated with honors. Graduation with honors is based on earning a degree or certificate for the Spring Semester at Lawson State Community College and maintaining a cumulative 3.00 grade point average or higher for all work completed prior to the awarding of the degree or certificate. Candidates graduating with honors wear cords during the Commencement Exercises. The averages necessary for earning graduation honors for all degrees and certificates are listed below: ***Summa Cum Laude: 3.90 to 4.00 – White Cord

**Magna Cum Laude: 3.70 to 3.89 – Blue Cord

*Cum Laude: 3.50 to 3.69 – Gold Cord

*Honors Certificate: 3.50 to 4.00 – Gold Cord

Commencement stoles are worn by members of the College’s nationally recognized honor societies:

The Alpha Epsilon Gamma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society

The Psi Chapter of Kappa Beta Delta Honor Society (for Business)

Note: The printing of this program precedes the completion of academic requirements and final evaluation of all candidates. Thus, the list of candidates and honors is tentative. The College reserves the right to add or withdraw candidates.

Academic Regalia The academic regalia worn today originated in the European universities of the Middle Ages, when a warm gown and hood were useful for scholars and clerics in unheated buildings. The distinctive gown served to set the student apart from his fellow citizens, hence the perennial controversy between “town and gown.” Until after the Civil War, students at most American universities wore caps and gowns daily while in residence. They varied in design until the American Intercollegiate Commission standardized them in 1984. At that time it was decided that all robes would be black: bachelor’s gowns to be made of worsted stuff with pointed sleeves; master’s gowns of silk with long closed sleeves; and doctor’s gowns of silk with longer sleeves and faced with black velvet from hem to neck and back. They also carried three velvet bands around each sleeve above the elbow. Hoods were made of the same materials as the gowns, the length varying with the degree. Only the lining of the hood indicated the university by its colors. The border of the hood indicated the academic discipline in which the degree was earned. Throughout the United States, there has been no change in the standard colors that represent the disciplines. The color facing the hood, whether it is black or colored, indicated the following: brown: architecture and the fine arts; citron yellow: social work; dark blue: philosophy; kelly green: medicine; lemon yellow: library sciences; light blue: education; light brown: business; lilac: dentistry; olive green: pharmacy; orange: engineering; peacock blue: international affairs; pink: music; purple: law; scarlet: theology; white: arts and letters; crimson: journalism and golden yellow: science. The College Mace The ceremonial mace has its origins in the Middle Ages. Originally a formidable battle weapon, it evolved into a graceful ceremonial object symbolizing the temporal and spiritual authority of the church. Cities began to adopt the use of maces to signify their own freedom and authority. In the 16th century, Oxford University began using a decorated mace in its ceremonial processions to signify academic independence and excellence. Since that time, the mace has been a sign of educational tradition and distinction. In commencement processions, the mace is carried before the President and the dignitaries composing the platform party. The mace is carried by the College Marshall. The Lawson State Community College mace, designed and constructed in 2007, consists of a three-inch bronze medallion bearing the college seal, which is framed by a ten-inch bronze wreath atop a hand shaped walnut staff.

The Presidential Chain The Presidential Chain of Office, used in academic celebrations, represents traditions dating as far back as the sixteenth century and today designates the presidential leadership of the College. The Lawson State Community College Chain of Office, designed and constructed in 2007, displays the names of the institution’s presidents, both past and present, as well as two academic divisions of the College, including Liberal Arts and Technology. From the chain hangs the Lawson State Community College seal. Gonfalons The gonfalon, a flag that hangs from a crosspiece or frame, originated in the medieval republics of Italy as an ensign of state or office. Gonfalons have been adopted in many colleges around the world as college or institutional insignias. The gonfalons represent the two academic divisions of Lawson State Community College – Liberal Arts and Technology. The colors of the College, dark blue and old gold, are joined together in a pattern common to both flags. Units within each division are represented by the following color codes:

LIBERAL ARTS

TECHNOLOGY

Health and Physical Education–Purple

Automotive–Lime Green

Humanities–Crimson

Business–Orange

Mathematics and Natural Science–Kelly Green

Manufacturing–Light Rose Occupational Programs–Light Blue

Nursing–White

Social Science–Dark Gold

Service Programs–Yellow

Oh Lawson State! (Tune: Londonderry Air)

Oh Lawson State, we hail, we hail thy noble name From age to age, throughout eternity. Steadfast and true we lift our voices now in praise. We'll cherish thee wherever we may be.
