Study proposal could be worth 10,000 jobs gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca Rockland communities east of Ottawa where many of these employees now live.

could also mean their moving to Kanata and neighbouring Barrhaven to be close to where they work. The mayor emphasized that Clarence- Rockland would not be doing a study. His goal is to get a guarantee from the UCPR for a joint study with the other senior levels of government. “What I’m trying to do is to ensure that we’re going to have some money to do a study,” he said. The next step, Mayor Guibord noted, will be to get the provincial and federal governments to support doing the study and see what other regional government or other agencies might also be willing to become involved.

“We need to know what will be the impact on Clarence-Rockland and Prescott- Russell,” said Mayor Marcel Guibord. Guibord received approval from council to ask the UCPR for a $50,000 subsidy towards a socio-economic impact study of a plan by the Department of National Defence to relocate 10,000 of its employees who now work in offices east of Ottawa to the old Nortel megaplex facility situated west of the city in the Kanata suburb. Many of those employees live in Rockland, Cumberland, Orléans, and other “bedroom. communities east of Ottawa. Relocating to a single central site in Kanata

They know there may be no way the federal government is going to back off of a plan to relocate 10,000 of its employees west to Kanata and Barrhaven. But Clarence-Rockland council members hope there might at least be a chance to make the folks on Parliament Hill understand how this could hurt communities like Clarence-Rockland on the east side of Ottawa. Clarence-Rockland will ask the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) if it is willing to help fund an economic impact study to determine how a defence department staff relocation plan will affect
