The Hours by Rose

A meditation on how the light hits Santa Cruz, CA throughout the hours of the day and night

The following photographs are a meditation on how the light hits Santa Cruz, California, throughout the hours of the day and night. The subject is my sister, who’s been with me through all of the moments in this special town, including but not limited to:

-Getting takeout at a mediocre Pizza place called “Pleasure Pizza.” -Hiking in the redwood forest. -The many and close between telephone wires. -The way the street lights illuminate our neighborhood -The warm glow of windows at night -Surfers and the white tops of their styrofoam boards.

I love horror and terror, especially in photography. Originally this book was meant to be a commentary on fear. But, as the pictures started to take shape, the story they crafted was not full of fear. It was full of long beaches, tall trees, golden hours, and frolicking around on the beach. For me, that’s not very scary. It’s more of an Instagram story But nonetheless, this series of photographs showed me how even the messiness of the telephone wires, the fog, and the cold ocean all culminate into this atmosphere that I proudly call home.

the talk of the beginning and the end, But I do not talk of the beginning or the end.
