New Frontier Immigration Law - July 2020

NWSLTTR

July 2020

People are often confused about what immigration law actually is. It’s an ever-changing set of guidelines that can certainly be hard to define, but the intention and spirit behind them remains unchanged. I practice immigration law because I love my country, and I want to help people who also love our country live their lives with the fullest freedoms our great nation has to offer. What’s most ironic about practicing immigration law is that in reality, I spend most days suing my country. But it’s not out of hate or anger — it’s out of respect and love for the system of checks and balances that we have in place here. I’ve always had a strong sense of patriotism, and to me, it seems like there’s no better way to honor it than by taking part in something that’s so deeply rooted in what democracy stands for. But this isn’t about me. And that’s another thing about immigration law — its practice and the things it can achieve reach far beyond any one case or circumstance. Every single member of our team here at New Frontier sees immigration law as the force of a modern- day social justice movement. When we work with an individual, we know that we’re making a broader impact so much bigger than any of us, no matter what side of the table we’re on. The desire for equality is something all Americans are born with, even if they may not realize it. In fact, equality is part of the very foundation of our country, and anyone who has that same value within themselves deserves to contribute to making our 50 states great. New Frontier was founded in Arizona, a state with so much beauty to offer. Its landscapes will always offer some level of discovery, and its people have a spirit of determination unlike anywhere else. So many people in our state have a desire to transform and create meaning in their lives. That’s why we chose the name New Frontier, fighting toward a better future for all whatwedoismuchbigger thananyoneofus

after all. There’s so much to be discovered, meaningful work to be done, and hope to be had for anyone who crosses into the new frontier of our state. We’re in the business of helping people who have been through extremely difficult situations, and we want to use those situations to change their lives for the better. We operate on the belief that there’s nothing in someone’s past that we can’t use to build a better future, and we approach every case we take with that mindset. If someone has been wronged, threatened, or misinformed simply because of where they were born, then our mission is to give them the fighting chance they deserve to prove they love their country just as much as those whose birth circumstances were a little more fortunate than theirs. Immigration law is confusing to many because it presents an unusual circumstance in which the very thing meant to free someone is also the thing holding them back. Many laws prevent some people from living full and just lives, but New Frontier uses those same laws to help people find ways to finally live the lives they’re longing for. We do what we do because we see the value in empowering our

community to work for equality. We believe everyone has a right to love this country and should be given the chance to express that right by living life to its fullest.

Military parole in Place your service to our country may also protect your family I love the Fourth of July and all it symbolizes for our great country. Anyone who loves America and its history of honoring those who fought for our freedom deserves to take part in those freedoms. That’s not always an easily achievable prospect for some, but if you or a loved one have fought for our country before, then something called parole in place may make it much easier for your family to achieve the immigration status they need. WHAT IT IS If you or someone in your family is serving in the U.S. military and wants to help a family member fix their immigration status, it’s possible to use your military status to help someone who may be in the U.S. without proper documentation. If you’re an active duty member, a current member of the Selected Reserve or the Ready Reserve, or if you’ve previously served in the U.S. Armed Forces or the aforementioned Reserves and were honorably discharged, then you may meet qualifications to help your loved one obtain their I-94 and green card. A TRUE STORY Michael served four years in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged after his commitment was up. That’s when he met and married his wife, Sara, who had been brought to the U.S. from Mexico 25 years previously when she was just a little girl. She had lived in the U.S. for most of her life but never secured proper documentation. With concerns over U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids mounting, Michael and Sara came to New Frontier for help with Sara’s immigration status, and we were able to navigate them through the parole in place process. Sara was ultimately able to receive her green card without ever having to leave the country. Parole in place can extend to spouses, parents, and children, so if you or a loved one has concerns about separation and deportation, then you may have options. We know you love our country just as much as we do and want to be here to help us celebrate many Independence Days to come. If you think parole in place could be a viable option for your family, then contact New Frontier so we can help.

There are many different opinions on the healthiness of snacking. Some people think of snacks as processed foods with high calories, but snacks don’t have to be junk food. Depending on what snacks you’re eating, and how often, these little in- between-meal bites can be highly beneficial or detrimental to your overall health. HEALTHY VS. UNHEALTHY SNACKS People snack when they’re hungry, but they also do it when they’re stressed, bored, or have a habit. When people snack on unhealthy junk food when they’re bored, the result is weight gain. An excellent way to avoid unhealthy snacks is to surround yourself with healthy alternatives. Fill your fridge and pantry with whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and nuts and legumes. With those in your kitchen, you’ll have plenty of healthy options to choose from when you’re hungry. WHO BENEFITS FROM SNACKING? Depending on your weight, fitness level, and medical conditions, snacking throughout the day can be more effective than eating three large meals a day. Individuals who are crunched for time, have particular health conditions, are athletic, or are trying to lose or maintain weight all benefit from healthy snacking throughout the day. People who have high cholesterol or diabetes can better maintain their cholesterol and blood glucose levels if they eat frequently during the day. For athletes, snacking helps distribute the consumption of nutrients their body needs throughout the day instead of all at once. This way, their energy levels stay the same instead of fluctuating with their meal times. If you find yourself in need of a quick bite, think clementines and almonds instead of chips and Pop-Tarts. You’ll still satisfy your hunger without jeopardizing your health or increasing your waistline.

If you’ve visited our office, then you’re likely well aware of the infectiously friendly disposition of Leslie Villa, our receptionist. Leslie is the eyes and ears of the entire firm because she’s there at the forefront of what we do for our clients. It was by rare luck and meaningful happenstance that Leslie came to work for New Frontier. “I found the opportunity to work with Hillary and New Frontier completely by chance,” Leslie says. “I had been waitressing but was looking for more meaningful work to do. Even though I had never worked in a law firm, Hillary gave me the opportunity to show that I care about this kind of work. Helping people through these situations is important to me.” Leslie has a lot of empathy for the clients she assists every day. “I have an uncle who was deported,” she shares. “He’s in La Palma Detention Center, south of Phoenix, and it’s really tough for him. It’s tough for our family, too.” Understanding the stress and emotion that many clients are going through is what makes Leslie so amazing at helping them. “I know how it feels to want nothing Meet leslie villa A receptionist you can rely on

more than to have your family member back. So, I do what I can to help make that happen for others.”

During the COVID-19 crisis, Leslie has often been the only person physically in our office, making sure important documents, payments, and appointments aren’t overlooked. “I didn’t quite know what to expect when I first started the job, and none of us knew what to expect when the COVID-19 outbreak started,” she explains. “But our work is so important that I was ready to continue coming in.” Leslie spends most of her time outside the office with her family. Social distancing means they haven’t been able to venture out as much, so they spend the extra time at home together finding shows on Netflix they can all enjoy. Next time you come in, say hello to Leslie and connect with her about the situation you might be going through, or even bring up your favorite TV shows. No matter what, Leslie is a selfless source of empathy when you need it most.

How Meals on Wheels Atlanta Stepped Up for Its Community

a meal for every member of the family Meals on wheels goes the extra mile

One volunteer with Meals on Wheels Atlanta, Larry Auberbach, had a unique experience delivering meals to Jeffery Jones and his dog, Grizzly. The volunteer told 11Alive News in

Meals on Wheels doesn’t often get the credit it deserves. The international nonprofit ensures those who are unable to buy or make their own meals get the food they need to survive. Of course, for many recipients, the efforts of the organization go far beyond “survival.” For those who receive food daily or weekly, those deliveries may be their only source of social interaction. And during times of social distancing, the program became more important than ever. Meals on Wheels doesn’t just serve meals to the elderly and people with disabilities — it also serves those people’s pets. In 2019, Meals on Wheels Atlanta realized there was a huge need in their community to feed the pets of senior citizens. It stands to reason that if an elderly individual is unable to shop or cook for themselves, their pets may be in a similar predicament. And when someone’s pet is their entire world, making sure the animal is fed and healthy means everything. In response to this need, Meals on Wheels Atlanta began stocking up on cat and dog food, creating its own pantry to serve the local pet community. When volunteers made their rounds delivering meals to seniors, they made sure to bring cat and dog food along, too.

Atlanta that Jeffery and Grizzly “have their own special relationship.” Larry loved Grizzly

long before Meals on Wheels Atlanta started the pet pantry because he saw how much Grizzly’s companionship meant to Jeffery. Now, Larry enjoys his service that much more since he gets to provide for Jeffery’s beloved pet as well. On top of delivering food to seniors and their pets, Meals on Wheels Atlanta also delivers pet toys and pet beds, and they are happy to take in any pet-related food or items for donation. The organization says this endeavor was done out of love, not only for the people they serve but also for the whole family — wagging tails, fuzzy whiskers, and all.
