2 Read this essay and answer the questions. 1 What is the writer’s opinion? 2 Do you agree with the writer? Why/Why not? 3 Does the writer mention any of your ideas in 1? If so, which? Home Help 1 Nowadays, companies spend so much money on advertising. Many adverts are specially designed to attract teenage consumers. Personally, I think the government should control these adverts more because they can have a negative effect on some of us. File Insert Object Type 2 Firstly, there are more and more teenagers who can afford to buy all sorts of products. However, it can be easy to influence some teenagers by making us feel that if we don’t buy a product, we won’t be as popular or trendy as other teenagers. Moreover, since many adverts show actors and models who look perfect, they can make some of us worry about our image. 3 Adverts for junk food, sweets and soft drinks can also lead teenagers into unhealthy eating habits. Fast food adverts are usually so happy, funny, colourful and exciting that they can give us the idea that life is much better when you consume these products. If only that was true! 4 To sum up, I believe that adverts try to persuade us to buy things by showing an unreal image of life. Although some of us have more money today, we have less experience of life than our parents and it can be harder for us to avoid the influence of advertising. Therefore, there should be more government control.

Oh dear. What seems to be the problem? I bought this hoodie here last week as a present for a friend. It shrank the first time he washed it! It was a large, but now it’s more like a small. I am sorry. We haven’t had anybody else with that problem. Are you sure he followed the washing instructions? Yes! I see. Well, we can either replace it for you straight away or we could give you a refund. Which would you prefer? I’ll take the refund, please. Fine. Have you got the receipt? Yes, here it is. Thank you. £40. There you are. Sorry about that.
