3 Look again at Ella’s email. Choose the correct alternative in the Writing bank. Writing bank Modifying normal and extreme adjectives We use adverbs to modify adjectives, to make them stronger or softer in order to give more accurate descriptions. For example, we use: ● very , extremely and really to make ‘normal’/ ‘extreme’ adjectives (e.g. impressive, great, busy, lively ) stronger. ● totally, absolutely, really and completely to make ‘normal’/‘extreme’ adjectives (e.g. packed, stunning, mad ) stronger. ● quite, a bit and rather to make ‘normal’ adjectives a little softer/stronger . 4 Choose the correct alternatives. 1 My hometown is completely/extremely big. 2 It’s extremely/totally freezing here in the winter. 3 The skyscrapers here are absolutely/extremely huge. 4 The castle is absolutely/extremely old. 5 We have an absolutely/a very modern shopping centre. 6 The city centre is totally/very spotless. Subject: Hi! Thanks for your last email. It was great to hear from you! You asked me to tell you something about my hometown. Well, Liverpool is one of the biggest cities in the UK and it’s also one of the most popular tourist destinations. It has more museums than any other English city outside London! Liverpool is a historic port. Hundreds of ships used to sail to and from America every year. Now, part of the port, the Albert Dock, is absolutely packed with tourists. There’s a really great art gallery there, and a museum for the most famous pop group ever, The Beatles! Some really stunning cruise ships still visit the city. In the last few years, the city centre has changed a lot. Some parts used to be quite run-down and a bit dirty, but it’s changed completely. They’ve built a really impressive shopping centre there. It’s called Liverpool One and it’s extremely busy and lively, especially at the weekend. Nowadays, Liverpool’s probably most famous for football. Liverpool FC have won lots of cups. And there’s another team in Liverpool called Everton. In general, people here are totally mad about football! Anyway, write back soon. Don’t forget to tell me about your hometown. All the best, Ella 1 attachment
