Lesson aim: To think about how you can manage study time effectively Video: Please take my phone, teacher! SEL Social and emotional learning: Managing limits TIME MANAGEMENT
5 Without the distractions of smartphones it can be easier to manage your study time. Read about three other ways to manage your study time effectively. Write a simple title for each section. 1 The only way you can remember all the school work you have to do is by writing it down on a timetable or in a diary. Do that as soon as you find out about it. Check your timetable or diary at the start and end of each day. 2 The most difficult part of doing homework or assignments is usually starting. It’s easy to find excuses for not beginning. Decide a time to start and finish your work, and don’t change those times. 3 With long and difficult assignments, it can be hard to know where to begin. Break big tasks into smaller pieces. And do the easiest part first. This can inspire you to continue. Lorem ipsum

1 In the UK there is one set of rules for all schools to control the use of smartphones by students. 2 It’s obligatory for students at Michaela Community School to leave their smartphones with the school for six months. 3 The first student thinks that worrying about your online image makes you sleep badly and stops you spending time with your family. 4 The second student thinks that receiving ‘likes’ stops you from thinking about your homework. 5 The school makes money from selling basic phones to the students. 6 Parents want their children to have phones, but not the Internet. 7 The second teacher says he hopes that after this experience students will not use the Internet again in the future.

speaking Follow the instructions. 1 Choose one sentence from the video that you think talks about a key concept. You don’t have to remember the sentence exactly. Just write down a basic idea that you heard and that you think was important. 2 Choose one phrase from the video text that moved you, interested you or provoked you. The phrase doesn’t have to be exactly what you heard. 3 Choose one word from the video that you think was central to the idea(s). 4 Share your sentence, phrase and word with other students. Are they similar or different? What important ideas or themes come out of your discussion? What are your main thoughts about the smartphone scheme at Michaela Community School?
