3 Think about … Digital skills
1 Starting point Do you remember reading the Culture exchange text on page 72 about British scientist Ada Lovelace? What did she do? Why was she so famous? Check your ideas by looking back at the text. Think of some famous scientists or inventors from your country. Why were/are they famous? speaking 2 Project task You want to help more people from other countries know about a famous scientist or inventor from your country. speaking Search the Internet for interesting information and facts about the person. Prepare one of these: A a poster C a video message B a presentation D an information leaflet. Research areas • the life of the scientist/inventor • their works, discoveries, inventions, theories, publications, etc. • prizes or awards that they won • museums, statues or monuments dedicated to them • their importance and relevance today
If the texts about the scientist from your country are in your own language, be careful using online translation tools to translate them. They are not always 100% correct!
Academic skills Don’t just copy and paste information and say it’s yours. That is called plagiarism. Read the information and then write a simple summary of what you remember and think is important, in your own words. Remember to say where you found the information. Collaboration When you work in a team, it can be helpful to take action and make suggestions early instead of waiting until problems develop. If nobody else is volunteering, you can politely offer to take the initiative. Useful language I don’t mind doing … I’m happy to … Why don’t I …? If you want, I’ll … Would you like me to …? If you like, I can … Intercultural awareness Look at sources in English to find out how famous the scientist or inventor you have chosen is outside your country. Is the fame and reputation of the scientist similar to their reputation inside your country, or are there any differences? What could explain any differences? Project time Do the project. Then present it to the class. 5 Evaluation Give each project a mark from 1 to 5 (5 = very good) for these categories. Content Design Presentation Language 4 speaking Lorem ipsum
