LIV COOKE was 14 when she signed to play with a football club in the north of England. In one match she had a back injury. To help her recover and stay fit, she started doing tricks with a football and improving her ball-control skills, all part of a sport called freestyle football. Because of her back problem, she had to practise sitting down. Luckily, this helped her to learn some very difficult tricks. She enjoyed it all so much that she decided to take up the sport full-time at the age of just 16. She became the UK’s first professional female football freestyler, the youngest in the world. 2017 was the year when Liv became the world champion at the age of just 18. To win a freestyle competition, two people go on stage for three minutes and take turns to do tricks for 30 seconds each. Judges then decide the winner. Liv often appears on social media, TV shows and adverts doing her amazing tricks. She used to be nervous about standing up and speaking at school, but now she can get up on a stage in front of thousands of people and show off her skills. She says it was freestyle football that changed her life. BEN NUTTALL is another great football freestyler whose videos are amazing. One day somebody offered him the chance to become a member of the England teqball team. His reply was more or less ‘What’s teqball?!’ In fact, it was three Hungarians who created the sport in 2014. It’s a combination of table tennis and football. It’s played on a special table that goes up in a curve in the middle. You can kick a football, or hit it with your head, knee or chest. You can touch the ball a maximum of three times, but each time it has to be with a different part of the body. The last time you touch the ball it must land on the opponent’s side of the table or you lose the point. If the opponents can’t return the ball, they lose the point. The first team to reach 20 points wins a set, and you play a maximum of three sets. Singles and doubles matches are played, and mixed couples or teams with male and female players are fine. After they called him, Ben went to France, which was where the Teqball World Cup took place that year. He was knocked out of the competition, but he really enjoyed learning the sport. Now some famous footballers play it in training sessions and people think it could one day become an Olympic® sport.

Liv Cooke says that freestyle football changed her life. In what different ways do you think sport can change people’s lives? What makes you say that? Use ideas in the text and/or other facts, opinions and experiences to justify your opinion. Then share your ideas with a partner.

Liv and Ben may be magicians with a football, but they can’t compare to VALENTINE DESCAMPS at horseball. Horseball is very different to football because you don’t kick the ball. The first thing that you need is a horse, of course, and then a football with six handles around it. You can pick the ball up and throw and catch it. But you can’t keep the ball in your hands for more than ten seconds, and your opponents can try to pull the ball out of your hands, like in rugby. You score by throwing the ball into a big basket. So, if you’re a fan of horses, rugby and basketball, this is the sport for you. But don’t think it’s easy. You need great balance, strength and confidence. And you need to be an excellent horse rider. 40 45 50
