Did you know that your shoulders are your most flexible andmovable joints? Your shoulders have tomove through an incredible 180 degrees of motion, while still maintaining stability and strength. The shoulder joint acts like a ball in a very shallow socket that is part of the shoulder blade. Some of the most important muscles in the rotator cuff are actually the smallest. The rotator cuff is made up of 4muscles that are small, but vital to keeping the ball stable in the socket. When these muscles are weak or injured, the ball can jam up into the socket of the shoulder blade, causing inflammation and pain. Your shoulders are extremely complex, comprised of multiple muscles, tendons, and bones. They provide you with the mobility you need to perform many of your tasks throughout the day. On July 18 and 19, Downtown Cheyenne hosted the 5th Annual Paint Slingers Art Festival and Competition. Over 30 artists from Cheyenne and all over the Front Range came together thanks to West Edge Collective and their initiative to create space that allows artists to show their creativity and passion for everyone in our community to see and enjoy. Cheyenne has been transformed with multiple murals and urban designs spread across the West edge of Downtown with more than 14 locations that were donated to the artist. One of those buildings was Avenues Physical Therapy Clinic, where five artists created two different murals on the exterior west wall in two days!
During the festival, Downtown Cheyenne had other events for the public, including a sidewalk art chalk challenge and a picnic table painting contest behind the Paramount Café. There was also an opportunity to purchase art. The idea behind the festival was to bring an awareness of urban art to the Cheyenne community. This year, the festival also gave the community a chance to safely come together, at a distance, to support local artists and businesses. Come check out the murals at Avenues Physical Therapy Clinic, as well as the other murals painted around the West Edge. And, when you do, make sure to come in and schedule your next PT appointment with one of our experienced therapists!

you more vulnerable to recurrence after the first dislocation occurs. • Arthritis. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the two most common types of arthritis. Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage in the shoulder joint experiences significant “wear and tear,” typically due to age or excessive overuse. Rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the immune system sees the joints as a threat. The immune system attacks the membranes surrounding the shoulder joint, resulting in pain and inflammation. • Tendinitis. Tendinitis in the shoulder joint occurs when the joint is excessively overused. Symptoms include swelling and painful impingement when raising the affected arm. This typically happens due to the demands of a sport or labor-intensive job, which can cause the tendons to experience ongoing inflammation. • Frozen shoulder. Medically referred to as “adhesive capsulitis,” frozen shoulder can occur if you have been bedridden for an extended period of time or if your arm has been in a cast or sling for a while. When you don’t have opportunities to exercise the shoulder, the tissues can stiffen up on you, thus causing this painful condition to occur. If your pain is stemming from tendon impingement, it will generally occur as you lift your arm, fading before it is raised completely skyward. If your pain is a result of shoulder degeneration, it is likely that you will feel persistent aches every time you move your arm in certain directions. Pain from an acute injury can be sudden and intense, making it difficult for you to move your shoulder at all. Common conditions that may be causing your shoulder pain include: • Strains and sprains. A strain occurs when a muscle or tendon is stretched too far or torn. A sprain occurs when a ligament is stretched too far or torn. Strains and sprains can result in an ongoing shoulder pain that may make it difficult to partake in exercise or even daily tasks. If the strain or sprain is minor, it can sometimes be iced at home and healed with rest. More severe strains and sprains will often require physical therapy treatments. • Torn cartillage. When a cartilage tears, you may experience a number of painful symptoms. You may experience decreased strength and a limited range of motion in the affected shoulder. You may also experience pain when moving your arm in certain ways. If you are suffering from a torn cartilage, physical therapy can provide relief. • Dislocation. Dislocation of the shoulder occurs when the head of the humerus popsout of place. This typeof injury isextremelypainful andunfortunatelymakes

PATIENT SUCCESS SPOTLIGHTS
“I had a sciatic nerve problem in my left leg, weak lower back, and especially weak legs. I could not walk any distance and from anxiety of falling I would become short of breath. At that time, I even used my walker to pervent falls. After several weeks of therapy, stretching and traction at Avenues and with the help of Kelsey and Jeremy I am able to walk half a mile without my walker and I don’t get short of breath. Now I always ride my stationary bike 2 miles a day and do my therapy exercise. I can do my housework with much less pain and problems. They knew instantly what needed to be done and started my therapy. If you have a problem of pain, I recommend calling Avenues Physical Therapy and discuss the problemwith them to find a plan to resolve the situation. I also highly recommend massages from Donna as she does a wonderful job. This also really helped any soreness that I had bothering me. Thank you for helping me with my pain” —Dorene E. “From fears of falling to walking half a mile!”
“Not in constant pain and I’m doing well!” “Before I had therapy, I had a hard time with grabbing things, my arms would hurt. After physical therapy, my arms feel better and no more constant pain in them and I am doing well. I like the different staff; they all have been so helpful to me. With them I used the arm bike, weights, small balls, and the gripper. Everything they showed me has helped, I hope the pain does not come back as before and if it does the exercises that I have at home will help.” — Reiko Y.

Raking leaves and gardening is one of the best things you can do for your body. First, it is a great way to get outside. Fall may be our last chance to get the vitamin D boost as the days get shorter. Gardening is also good for your heart health, all the raking, digging and weeding burns calories and helps strengthen your heart. The best thing about gardening is being able to harvest what you have worked all summer long for, fresh vegetables and fruit. We all know that fresh is better and what is better than fresh from your own backyard! (Kelsey expects to get 30 plus cups of pumpkin puree for soup, pancakes, bread, and some pie out of his harvest this year!)

Avenues Physical Therapy SHOULDER PAIN AUDIT
Q: I woke up with shoulder pain 3 days ago and it hasn’t gone away. Can physical therapy help me? A: This is a common question, and one we hear from a lot of people. Before we answer this for you, we want to walk you through a set of simple questions. We call it the ‘shoulder pain audit.’ It will tell us if PT can help you or not.
Question 1: Where is your pain? The most common areas to experience pain are directly in front of your shoulder, directly on top of your shoulder, or in a more involved shoulder problem – like a rotator cuff injury – you might feel achiness on the side of your shoulder and down into the side of your arm a little. If the pain goes past your elbow, is above your shoulder and into your neck, or in the back into the shoulder blade, it is possible that something other than your shoulder is responsible for your pain.
Question 3: Yes or No — Do you have weakness in your shoulder? Weakness of the shoulder can be due to several different reasons.
Qu estion 4: Yes or No — Do you have difficulty reaching overhead or behind your back?
Now that the test is done, let’s take a look at this. A really simple rule we use in PT is: if the pain is reproducible, then it’s reducible . This means that if one of these movements made your shoulder pain, soreness or stiffness worse, then there’s a good chance we can help you in physical therapy. So here’s what to do next: if you are ready to get rid of that shoulder pain so that you can get back to your life pain-free, then complete this form and bring it with you to your FREE exam. At t he FREE exam you will receive: • A detailed plan that explains where your pain is coming from • What successful treatment looks like • The cost and time needed to heal
Question 2: Yes or No—Do you have numbness, tingling or burning? Numbness and tingling of the shoulder and down the arm may indicate another type of injury involving irritated or compressed nerves. The more we understand about your symptoms, the more accurately we will be able to find its source.

Patient Testimonial “My journey With Avenues Therapy Clinic started about four years ago when I was referred to them because I had pain in my left shoulder from doing the easiest of tasks, and I am Left handed. I had a hard time opening up jars, throwing baseballs, rolling my bowling ball, scratching my lower back with my left hand, and picking up my grandchildren. After three months of physical therapy, Kelsey Kean had me doing these tasks and items again so well that after my last physical therapy session, I threw my first 300 bowling game in league play. I would just like to thank the Whole Staff of Avenues Physical Therapy Clinic for everything you have done for me. Especially Thank you to Kelsey and Linda. for your help and down home caring.” — J.V.
