Avenues Physical Therapy SHOULDER PAIN AUDIT

Q: I woke up with shoulder pain 3 days ago and it hasn’t gone away. Can physical therapy help me? A: This is a common question, and one we hear from a lot of people. Before we answer this for you, we want to walk you through a set of simple questions. We call it the ‘shoulder pain audit.’ It will tell us if PT can help you or not.

Question 1: Where is your pain? The most common areas to experience pain are directly in front of your shoulder, directly on top of your shoulder, or in a more involved shoulder problem – like a rotator cuff injury – you might feel achiness on the side of your shoulder and down into the side of your arm a little. If the pain goes past your elbow, is above your shoulder and into your neck, or in the back into the shoulder blade, it is possible that something other than your shoulder is responsible for your pain.

Question 3: Yes or No — Do you have weakness in your shoulder? Weakness of the shoulder can be due to several different reasons.

Qu estion 4: Yes or No — Do you have difficulty reaching overhead or behind your back?

Now that the test is done, let’s take a look at this. A really simple rule we use in PT is: if the pain is reproducible, then it’s reducible . This means that if one of these movements made your shoulder pain, soreness or stiffness worse, then there’s a good chance we can help you in physical therapy. So here’s what to do next: if you are ready to get rid of that shoulder pain so that you can get back to your life pain-free, then complete this form and bring it with you to your FREE exam. At t he FREE exam you will receive: • A detailed plan that explains where your pain is coming from • What successful treatment looks like • The cost and time needed to heal

Question 2: Yes or No—Do you have numbness, tingling or burning? Numbness and tingling of the shoulder and down the arm may indicate another type of injury involving irritated or compressed nerves. The more we understand about your symptoms, the more accurately we will be able to find its source.

Patient Testimonial “My journey With Avenues Therapy Clinic started about four years ago when I was referred to them because I had pain in my left shoulder from doing the easiest of tasks, and I am Left handed. I had a hard time opening up jars, throwing baseballs, rolling my bowling ball, scratching my lower back with my left hand, and picking up my grandchildren. After three months of physical therapy, Kelsey Kean had me doing these tasks and items again so well that after my last physical therapy session, I threw my first 300 bowling game in league play. I would just like to thank the Whole Staff of Avenues Physical Therapy Clinic for everything you have done for me. Especially Thank you to Kelsey and Linda. for your help and down home caring.” — J.V.
