row 3: Landing The crate comes ashore and is drawn up the sand, still roped to the dhow that carried it, waiting to be opened when the community gathers. Sufra at the Beach The crate opens, the gathering assembles. Carpets are laid on the sand, food is carried down from the community’s kitchens. row 4: Stage A larger crate unfolds into a raised platform, its panels form the structure beneath and gauze is hung above. The community shares a meal and, in return, leaves its own inheritances in the drawers set within the stage, to travel on with the archive. Repacking Together the community closes the crate, its panels swing back into place around what they have given, and the boats are drawn back out to the vessel.

Archivists Within the vessel, archivists tend the crates and maintain the conditions that keep the collection safe; a crew drawn entirely from the diaspora who load and unload each item as it comes and goes. row 2: Loading The crane swings a crate over the side and lowers it into a waiting dhow, which pulls away toward shore while the next boat waits on its tether for its turn. Ferrying The laden boats draw away from the vessel in a line, each carrying a crate toward shore, strung together by the ropes that keep the small craft in convoy.
