Ground Floor Plan of the Marine Research Centre The central territorial basin model replicates the ocean surface of the waters surrounding North Vancouver Island. Specialised laboratories (for ocean acidification, climate mesocosm experiments, and harmful algal bloom detection) overlook the basin, where physical simulations are calibrated with real-time environmental data and paired with digital climate models to test future marine scenarios.
1:100 model of the Marine Research Centre containing a 1:200,000 territorial basin model The territorial basin model functions as the building’s primary laboratory, infrastructure and public forum. While represented here as a 1:10 architectural model, the basin itself is conceived at a 1:2,000 horizontal scale and 1:100 vertical scale, compressing the coastal waters and bathymetry of northern Vancouver Island into a manipulable environmental model.
The elevated perspective supports civic use, where planning discussions can reference the territorial model directly.
Second Level Floor Plan An exterior ramp leads visitors to public walkways and viewing platforms overlooking the research spaces and the basin model. Lecture rooms and exhibition spaces are integrated along the walkways, allowing visitors to observe from above and engage with ongoing environmental research.
