The land around the channels is muddy with wild rice, rushes, Sandhill Cranes, pelicans, many, many other species but no moose, and that was ominous. The river is drained and re-flooded every 24 hours depending upon the dams. SUZANNE STEELE is a Gaudry/Fayant poet whose heritage stretches back to 12,000+ years on the continent on one side of the family, and to sixteenth century France, the early fur trade, the Hudson’s Bay Company on the other. Her opera, Li Keur, Riel’s Heart of the North , premiered at Manitoba Opera in Winnipeg in 2023.
