HOT|COOL NO.2/2016 - "District cooling in the Middle East"

P16

END USER MARKET DISTRIBUTION IN GCC

Different procurement strategies are adopted in GCC for district cooling plants. These range from traditional procurement to joint ventures, design-build-operate (DBO) to concession agreements based on build-own-operate (BOO) and build-operate-transfer (BOT). Most of the district cooling plants in GCC are constructed by engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts. The tariff structure in an end-user agreement usually contain three components: connection charges, capacity charges and consumption charges. Among the major district cooling operators in GCC are Empower, Tabreed, Marafeq Qatar, Emicool, and Qatar Cool.

Distr ict cool ing has a br ight and promising future in GCC. Its penetration is increasing with the increase in the real estate market and it has become a preferred choice for new developments. The energy and water conservation estimates provided by experts support the district cooling in the region as the most sustainable and efficient cooling technology. Local consultants and developers are considering combined heat and power (CHP), TriGeneration and solar cooling as the potential technologies for integration with district cooling technology to further enhance the system efficiency by adopting a holistic approach.

It is hardly a secret that the sun does not always shine in Denmark. That is why the construction of a seasonal thermal store, where the energy can be deposited until needed, is valuable. On sunny days, the heat is absorbed in water in a pit and saved for district heating consumers to use during autumn and winter. This 200-million- litre/5.3-million-gallon pit, the largest in the world, has been designed for Vojens District Heating by Ramboll.

THIS PIT REDUCES CO2 BY 6,000 TONNES (AND SAVES 10% ON THE HEATING BILL)
