NEW YEAR, NEW BEGINNINGS
The New Year has brought new beginnings for many well-known names in the industry from LED Group’s acquisition of our cover star, ATC, to Adrian McGarrity bringing a fresh approach as new Group MD of Core Distribution. A big focus on developing a pipeline of talent is also evident, with Suir Engineering launching a new Apprentice Centre of Excellence alongside plans to phase in 200 new jobs over the coming year. Further news inside includes success for SRC student Jonathan Gough, who picked up a bronze award at SkillELECTRIC 2024, and an increase in the pay rate for first- and second-year apprentices negotiated by the ECA, SELECT and Unite. In arguably our most intriguing case study to date, Vaughan Engineering Services leads an MEP installation with uniquely complex power and water demands at NI Fire & Rescue Service’s impressive new campus. And you’ll find the latest on key events for your calendar including ELECTEX Belfast (April 9-10) and an EIC seven-a-side football tournament (May 16). LED GROUP ACQUIRES ATC FOLLOWING CAPITAL INVESTMENT INJECTION
Technical support for the ETIM data standard is now available to manufacturers, wholesalers and merchants operating in Ireland’s electrotechnical, building materials, HVAC and plumbing sectors. The Republic of Ireland officially joined the internationally-recognised data model for the standardisation and classification of technical product data on January 1. In recognition of Ireland joining ETIM International, ETIM UK is changing its name to ETIM UK and Ireland Limited, a partnership between the Electrical Distributors’ Association (EDA) and the Builders Merchants Federation. Used across Europe for over 30 years, the ETIM product data classification has expanded into North America and Australia/New Zealand in recent years. Companies adopting the standard can exchange product data with greater ease along their supply chains in multiple languages, improving efficiency and reducing errors. Margaret Fitzsimons, EDA CEO and a member of the ETIM International Board, said, “We have worked closely with the Hardware Association of Ireland and the Electrical Industry Federation of Ireland and its constituent associations on this initiative and look forward to continuing to do so.” www.etim-uk-and-ie.org NEW RESOURCE OFFERED TO IRISH ELECTRICAL MANUFACTURERS & MERCHANTS

ELECTRICIANS AMONG KEY USERS OF FINANCIAL OMBUDSMAN SERVICE
A free and easy-to-use dispute resolution agency is highlighting its services for small businesses in Northern Ireland after electricians were identified as key users among 4,800 cases in an eight-month period. Figures from the Financial Ombudsman Service,
covering April to November 2024, highlight challenges faced by small firms including traders such as electricians and plumbers. Fraud and scams remain the most common issue raised by businesses, generating more than 1,000 complaints over the eight- month period, with just under half related to scams in which people use an online bank transfer to inadvertently pass money to a fraudster. Other common complaints included financial providers’ poor administration and customer service, as well as insurers
declining commercial motor and property insurance claims. For example, a sole trader complained to the Service after his insurer reduced the value of his van theft claim, claiming misrepresentation that it was personally owned when it belonged to his business. The Ombudsman concluded the sole trader was legally indistinguishable from his business and directed the insurer to pay the full claim amount. www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk

STRATEGY & INVESTMENT
Energy Storage Ireland (ESI) has published recommendations for Ireland’s Programme for Government, highlighting the contribution energy storage can make to Ireland’s energy security, electricity prices and decarbonisation targets. ESI said it will work with the next Oireachtas to support delivery of climate action targets and enable a secure, carbon-free electricity system, building on the 1GW of battery storage currently operational in Ireland. Recommendations include implementing a national energy storage strategy, an investment framework for long-duration electricity storage and ensuring the planning system supports the deployment of renewables and supporting infrastructure. ESI is also calling for the removal of barriers including market systems and network charges restricting the ability of energy storage assets to trade, and barriers to the co-location of mixed projects such as storage with wind or solar PV to enable more effective use of the grid. Representing over 70 public and private sector organisations engaged in the development of energy storage in Ireland and Northern Ireland, ESI supports the delivery of energy storage technologies to enable a secure, carbon-free electricity system on the island of Ireland by 2035. www.energystorageireland.com

Leading on from the popularity of the Almeria ECO Digital Panel Heater, ATC’s technical team has been hard at work innovating a new addition to its electric panel heater range. The Runback (landlord) mode is an important energy-saving feature for particular applications and has been one of the Almeria Eco range’s unique selling points for many years. Runback Mode is a unique feature aimed specifically at landlord situations where the landlord wants to have limited control in order to conserve energy. The landlord pre-selects these limits which are password locked from end- users. LIGHTING
LUCECO’S NEW FTYPE ELITE HAS BEEN DEVELOPED THROUGH EXTENSIVE COLLABORATION WITH CONTRACTORS WHO INSTALL THOUSANDS OF DOWNLIGHTS ANNUALLY… Contractor insights drive downlight innovation
Luceco’s latest innovation in downlighting technology has been shaped by the hands that matter most - those of professional electrical contractors. The new FType Elite downlight represents a significant advancement in installation efficiency and practical functionality, developed through extensive collaboration with contractors who install thousands of downlights annually. The development team worked alongside a dedicated focus group of electrical professionals, observing their installation processes and gathering insights that have directly influenced the product’s design. This collaborative approach has resulted in adjustments that specifically address common installation challenges. Shyel Stark, Global Product Manager at Luceco, said, “We’ve listened and delivered on the details that mattered. By putting contractors at the heart of our development process, we’ve been able to develop a downlight that is truly easy to install. Every enhancement in the FType Elite has been vetted and refined based on real-world installation experiences.”
Luceco’s new downlight has undergone comprehensive testing to ensure
reliable performance in every application.
Key features driven by contractor feedback include: • ClipFit System that allows full unrestricted access for easier wiring. Once cables are attached, a simple push into the housing and close of the lid secures the cables. • Optimised cable exit designed specifically for smooth fitting through a 76mm cutout. • Advanced NEL/NEL PushFit terminal blocks compatible with both solid and stranded cables. • A QuickView window enabling swift cable inspection after the lid is secured. • Removable terminal block with first second fix connector that dramatically reduces 500V testing time during full installations. The FType Elite maintains Luceco’s signature premium features, including a wide 60-degree baffled back lens for reduced glare, while incorporating these practical innovations. The power change range offers remarkable versatility with both 4 Colour CCT or D2W CCT options, delivering complete flexibility for any installation environment.
Fire-rated and fully compliant with Part L building regulations, the FType Elite has undergone comprehensive testing to ensure reliable performance in every application. This rigorous certification, coupled with a seven- year warranty, demonstrates Luceco’s confidence in its durability and performance. The range includes regressed, flat and adjustable options, with convenient 10-pack quantities available for larger projects. “The FType Elite represents our commitment to creating products that genuinely serve the needs of electrical professionals,” said Shyel. “We’ve taken on board every piece of feedback to engineer a solution that makes installation faster, easier and more reliable.” The FType Elite is available through electrical wholesalers now, ready to transform your next installation project. For more information on the new FType Elite, the FType range of fire- rated downlighters or any of Luceco’s extensive range of lighting, wiring accessories, sustainable energy and EV solutions, visit: www.luceco.com
