Mares Connect, a 190km subsea cable connecting North Wales and RoI, is among new interconnectors granted approval.

APPROVAL GRANTED FOR NEW INTERCONNECTORS BETWEEN IRELAND AND GB

New grid interconnectors between the Republic of Ireland and Wales, as well as Northern Ireland and Scotland, have been greenlit by Ofgem. The GB utility regulator has approved Mares Connect, a 190km subsea cable delivering 0.75GW of additional electricity capacity between North Wales and RoI. It has also given the go ahead for LirIC, a subsea interconnector of around 142km delivering 0.7GW of additional electricity capacity between Kilroot in NI and Hunterston in Ayrshire. With GB aiming to be a net exporter of

energy by 2030, the greenlit projects will maximise homegrown wind power by providing additional channels for exporting in times of energy surplus and importing during times of more limited domestic supply. Interconnectors already operational between GB and the island of Ireland include 500MW to NI (Moyle) and 500MW to RoI (East West), while the GreenLink is currently under construction to RoI. The new projects are all expected to be complete and operational by the end of 2032. www.ofgem.gov.uk
