STRATEGY & INVESTMENT

Energy Storage Ireland (ESI) has published recommendations for Ireland’s Programme for Government, highlighting the contribution energy storage can make to Ireland’s energy security, electricity prices and decarbonisation targets. ESI said it will work with the next Oireachtas to support delivery of climate action targets and enable a secure, carbon-free electricity system, building on the 1GW of battery storage currently operational in Ireland. Recommendations include implementing a national energy storage strategy, an investment framework for long-duration electricity storage and ensuring the planning system supports the deployment of renewables and supporting infrastructure. ESI is also calling for the removal of barriers including market systems and network charges restricting the ability of energy storage assets to trade, and barriers to the co-location of mixed projects such as storage with wind or solar PV to enable more effective use of the grid. Representing over 70 public and private sector organisations engaged in the development of energy storage in Ireland and Northern Ireland, ESI supports the delivery of energy storage technologies to enable a secure, carbon-free electricity system on the island of Ireland by 2035. www.energystorageireland.com
