The current voting age in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is 18. However, senior (a) p in parties like Labour and the Liberal Democrats had a (b) c to lower the voting age to 16 in the general election in 2017. They argued that the (c) l states that 16- and 17-year-olds can pay tax, join the army and become a parent, which are responsibilities as big as voting. In fact, the Scottish (d) g allowed 16- and 17-year-olds to vote for the first time in the 2014 independence referendum, and they can now vote in elections for the Scottish parliament. Interestingly, the percentage of 16- to 17-year- old voters in 2014 was higher (75%) than older age groups, such as 18–24-year-olds (54%). Research has also shown that a lower voting age in Scotland has boosted an interest in (e) p among young people, according to Dr Eichhorn at the University of Edinburgh. They are now more likely to join a political (f ) p , sign a petition or vote for policies that affect their future. And if you think 16 is too young to (g) v , Professor David Runciman, a professor of politics at Cambridge University, says we should give the vote to six-year- olds! He thinks there is a democratic crisis in the UK, because the ageing UK (h) p outnumbers young people. He thinks the system needs more life and energy. He says that if more young people voted in (i) g elections, they would have a real chance to shape the future and choose who would govern us. What do you think? Six, sixteen, or should we keep it at eighteen? Should 16-year-olds be allowed to vote?
