Paragraph 2: Explain why what Alex found was surprising and what he did. Paragraph 3: What happened next? Paragraph 4: Bring the story to a conclusion. Writing bank Narrative tenses 1 We use the past simple to tell the main events and actions in the story. 2 We use the past continuous to describe scenes and talk about activities in progress. 3 We use the past perfect for the background of the story, to talk about actions that happened before other actions in the past. 4 We use used to to talk about past habits. 5 We use must / may / might / can’t have to make speculations or deductions about what happened.
Task Write a story for an international magazine for teenagers. Use around 170 words. Your story must begin with this sentence:
When Alex opened the box, he couldn’t believe his eyes! It must include: a surprising discovery a danger.
Prepare 6 Make notes on what you could write about in the story. 1 How had Alex got the box and what was in it?
2 When did the story take place?
3 Where was he and who was with him?
4 Why was it a surprising discovery and how did Alex feel about it?
5 What was the danger?
6 What happened next?
7 How did the story end?
