A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 10

Last Thursday, ‘The Globe Players’ theatre group performed for all of the English GCSE students to support their English Literature studies and bring the plays they are studying to life. Year 10s watched ‘An Inspector Calls’ by J.B Priestley and Year 11s watched either Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ or ‘Macbeth’. Students commented on how useful it was to see the whole play without interruption to help them understand the structure of the play and the character arcs. The actors also added a commentary on the context of the plays which help students grasp the ideas and perspectives of the writers. Last Friday was BBC’s Children in Need Day. Students and staff got into the spirit by taking part in our non-uniform fundraiser event to raise money for this very worthy cause. It was such a delight seeing everyone’s enthusiasm towards this event, many students and staff looked ‘spotacular’ as they wore spots in line with this year’s theme. Some forms even went the extra mile by hosting mini cake sales within tutor time! This day was a great way to raise money and it proved a huge success as we can reveal the current amount raised at the time of writing is an incredible £1413! Thank you to everyone who took part in the event and made donations - this wouldn’t have been possible without your support. Our JustGiving donations page will remain open and can be viewed here. We have had our school production of Annie take place 4 nights in a row this week, which many Year 10 students took part in, whether they had a main lead role or were working behind the scenes on the props and music. I was so impressed with the talent and dedication exhibited from all of the students and the production was absolutely superb! It was so lovely to see students really throwing themselves into the life of the school and it was clear that they had all worked exceptionally hard to pull off such a slick and entertaining performance. They should all be very proud of themselves! Well done to our Under 16 Basketball team who finished in 2nd place at their tournament on Wednesday. Our top epraise points scorers this week are Felicity J in 10SHO, Anna B in 10SHO and Louise H in 10PCL. Well done and keep up the good work. Next week we will be having an assembly on Friday to discuss work experience which will take place at the end of the Summer term. More information to follow. We will also be running workshops to promote resilience and beat gender biases for the whole year group on Wednesday and Thursday.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Once, Now, Then, After... - Morris Gleitzman “Everybody deserves to have something good in their life at least once.” The seven book series by Morris Gleitzman is a gripping read surrounding the story of a young Jewish boy during World War Two. He is determined to run away from his orphanage and save his parents from the Nazis. I loved this series because it is very emotional and intriguing. You grow to connect to the characters on a personal level and develop a deeper understanding of what people went through during the war. ~ Recommended by Yasemin A, Year 11 student
