A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12

As part of our enrichment programme, Sixth Form English Literature students had the opportunity to hear a lecture about their A Level prose text ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ by Margaret Atwood. We also welcomed A Level students from Teddington and Turing House to experience a Literature lecture at university level. Fiona Tolan, who lectures on Contemporary Women’s Writing at Liverpool John Moores University, delivered a fascinating lecture on ‘The Politics of Memory’. The students commented that the talk was useful and gave them a greater insight into the novel. Last Friday was BBC’s Children in Need Day. Students and staff got into the spirit by taking part in our non-uniform fundraiser event to raise money for this very worthy cause. It was such a delight seeing everyone’s enthusiasm towards this event, many students and staff looked ‘spotacular’ as they wore spots in line with this year’s theme. Some forms even went the extra mile by hosting mini cake sales within tutor time! This day was a great way to raise money and it proved a huge success as we can reveal the current amount raised at the time of writing is an incredible £1413! Thank you to everyone who took part in the event and made donations - this wouldn’t have been possible without your support. Our JustGiving donations page will remain open and can be viewed here. We have had our school production of Annie take place 4 nights in a row this week, which many Year 12 students took part in, whether they had a main lead role or were working behind the scenes on the props and music. I was so impressed with the talent and dedication exhibited from all of the students and the production was absolutely superb! It was so lovely to see students really throwing themselves into the life of the school and it was clear that they had all worked exceptionally hard to pull off such a slick and entertaining performance. They should all be very proud of themselves! Next Tuesday after school, Psychology students have been invited to attend a talk by Professor Mark Blagrove, who is going to talk to the students about “The Psychology of Dreams”. He will discuss the psychology and neuroscience of dreaming, including in this a positive evaluation of the views of Sigmund Freud. He will also address recent findings that the discussion of dreams leads to increased empathy towards the dream-sharer and that dream-sharing may have had an effect or even evolutionary function in human history and prehistory in promoting group bonding and mutual understanding.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Tender is the night - F.Scott Fitzgerald

“I want to give a really BAD party. I mean it. I want to give a party where there’s a brawl and seductions and people going home with their feelings hurt and women passed out in the cabinet de toilette. You wait and see.” Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a classic novel set in the 1920s in the French Riviera. Like his more famous novel, The Great Gatsby, it follows the lives of the elite as they strive for influence and power in a changing world. If you want a challenging but rewarding read, I highly recommend this book and Fitzgerald’s other works.
