Proaudio Sound Press Magazine - December 2023

Proaudio: Your performances are known for igniting dancefloors. What's your secret to consistently delivering memorable sets? Dean Fuel: I pour all my energy into every set, preparing extensive playlists for flexibility. My focus remains on the dancefloor, adapting to keep the energy flowing. Remember, I'm there for them, not the other way around. Proaudio: Share your experiences playing at top festivals and clubs. Any standout moments or venues close to your heart? Dean Fuel: Opening for Swedish House Mafia to 15,000 in Cape Town stands out. ULTRA sets and H2O festivals for their massive stages and crowds are memorable. Opening for Armin Van Buuren on the Boombox tour was remarkable due to its groundbreaking technology. Darker, underground clubs in Cape Town, like Modular, hold a special place for their intense vibe.

Proaudio: Tell us about your label, Smaak Music, and its vision. Dean Fuel: Smaak Music was born during lockdown to release my and like-minded artists' music, aiming for a global stage. Our releases have earned top spots on Beatport, showcasing diverse genres and unique sounds. Proaudio: Performing at festivals like H2O and Ultra Music Festival, what sets them apart? Dean Fuel: Their scale is monumental — massive stages, colossal crowds, and exceptional production. Organizing these events requires precision but rewards attendees with a world-class party experience. Proaudio: We've heard you're a dog lover. Introduce us to your furry friends and how they fit into your busy life. Dean Fuel: I have two rescue Pekingese pups, Fibi and Zoe. They're family, offering unconditional support and excitement no matter the hour — coming home to them is the best feeling! Proaudio: How do you see the future of electronic music, and what goals do you have for your journey ahead? Dean Fuel: Electronic music is established and set to grow. My goals are simple — keep creating, playing, and loving music. Playing more internationally, growing my label, and discovering local talent are on the horizon.

Proaudio: How has living in Cape Town influenced your music and DJing style?

Dean Fuel: Cape Town's creativity, expressive nature, and vibrant club culture heavily influenced my sound and direction. Its freedom in fashion, sexuality, and music has been liberating, shaping the flavor I proudly share globally. Proaudio: Your radio mixes on Roger Goode's show are well-received. Thoughts on the role of radio in promoting electronic music and your approach to curating mixes? Dean Fuel: Radio remains a vital platform to reach a broad audience. Presenters like Roger Goode lead the forefront of dance music culture. I use this time to showcase new music, tell stories, and give each mix a distinct identity.
