Proaudio: Congratulations on the release of "Soulscape Philosophy" on Soul Candi Records. Could you share the inspiration behind this track? V.underground: Initially planned for my 2022 Mzwakhe album, the track didn't capture the desired sound. In 2023, revisiting it with BeatSoul, we achieved the new age soulful sound I sought. Pixie Benette's addition infused it with a long-drive summer soulful feel. Proaudio: Your latest album, "Mzwakhe (His House)," just dropped. Could you expand on the themes explored in this album and the message you hope listeners take away? V.underground: The album aimed to explore a different sound while retaining my original essence, staying authentically African. Proaudio: Your journey with Soul Candi Records has evolved. How did it begin, and how has your role transformed? V.underground: Starting at the Soul Candi Institute Of Music, I later became an inter- lecturer. Recognizing my talent, Sergio Botelho directed me to Soul Candi Studios. Returning after its reopening felt like a natural homecoming. Collaborating with African artists and incorporating our native languages was essential.
Proaudio: Collaborating with RJ Benjamin and Shimza provided valuable experiences. What lessons did you gain from these collaborations? V.underground: Lessons in discipline, the transformative effect of fame and money, and respecting one's music and talent were pivotal takeaways. Proaudio: As a Mixing & Mastering Engineer, what's your approach to achieving desired sound quality? V.underground: Meticulous attention to detail is key. Eliminating unwanted frequencies during production, taking breaks to refresh my ears, and starting with essential elements like kick and bass are crucial. Good mixing is fundamental; mastering won't salvage a poorly mixed track. Proaudio: When remixing a track, how do you infuse your unique touch into the music? V.underground: The emotional impact of the original track guides my remix selection. Starting with bass, chords, or drums sets the tone, ensuring it resonates with my artistic vision.
