Shopping gears up for the festive season

Melbourne retail bounces back. Dr. Tony McGough Partner, Head of Research & Consulting, Victoria

As this month’s report comes out, we will be in the middle of the busiest time of the year for retailers. Retailers, and the city as a whole are already dressing up for the festive season. It starts with Black Friday weekend, which last year saw over $90m spent in the City of Melbourne, and nearly $50m spent on the actual day. December ramps up with end-of-year parties and preparations for the seasonal holiday leading to bumper spending throughout. Given latest figures for September show household spending continue the 4% y/y growth of the last few months, we should be expecting another bumper year. There is always a slow-down post-Christmas, and when the weather is good people take the opportunity to head out to regional Victoria and further afield. However, this is where the buzz of Melbourne helps the re-vitalisation. This year, unlike last, we will have the Boxing Day Ashes to bring life back to Melbourne. No sooner is that over than we have the Aussie Open which adds over half a billion to the state economy, and the Formula 1 exhibition has also already begun. For the non-sporty amongst us there is everything from exhibitions of Viking treasure to Cats the Musical to keep you coming into the city.
