Welcome to Lotterywest Films
We live in a time of continuous content. And that’s what makes film festivals so important right now. Film festivals celebrate independent voices and the stories being told outside the commercial sphere. Drawing curious audiences, they help us look outward – to experience the lives of others across languages, environments, time and perspectives. Bold and ambitious cinema sits next to audience favourites, while we sit next to friends or strangers in the hushed quiet of a shared space. Perth Festival’s Lotterywest Films 2026 is no different. It invites you to discover the world through film. Cinema is a democratic art by design. We watch these stories together and, in turn, these stories connect us to a global world and global conversations. We join the collective of audiences who come before and after. Love, community, the natural world, rebellion and resilience are some of the many themes to discover, contemplate, delight in or debate across this program. Fuel a weekly Somerville habit or revel in multiple award-winning and boundary- pushing cinematic marvels through our February mini festival that celebrates the scope and imagination of the world’s dynamic screen culture. All within the sanctuary of Somerville, Perth’s trailblazing space for independent cinema. Madeline Bates Perth Festival Film and XR Curator

Capturing the youthful dynamism and creative chaos at the heart of one of the world’s most beloved and influential films, Nouvelle Vague is a love letter to Godard’s genius, its charismatic stars, the French New Wave and the transformative power of cinema. Former art student, now out-of-work carpenter JB hatches a cunning plan – to steal a handful of paintings from a small museum outside of Boston. It may seem like a bad idea, but he’s got it all figured out … apart from what to do with his kids while the theft is taking place, and what to do with the paintings once he has them. The Secret Agent O Agente Secreto
Dreams Drømmer
‘Moments of anarchic humour amid genuine suspense.’ THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho delivers one of the year’s greatest films, a dynamic, shape- shifting epic set against a colour-saturated backdrop of ’70s Brazil, Carnival and political corruption. The winner of three major awards at Cannes (including Best Director and Best Actor for its star Wagner Moura) The Secret Agent is a thrillingly unpredictable, empowering political fable about people swept up in forces beyond their control. A sprawling, sly, genre-bending slow-burn thriller driven by hypnotic tension, this is essential viewing. Winner Best Actor, Best Director & International Critic’s Prize (FIPRESCI) 2025 Cannes Film Festival

To help her get over her obsession she pours all her feelings and experiences into writing, sharing her intimate journal with her mother and grandmother. This queer coming-of-age story is a nuanced, sensitive depiction of a transformative first crush and an intelligent exploration of writing, inspiration and the power of taking control of one’s own narrative. Sound of Falling In die Sonne schauen
Pillion
‘A work of thrilling ambition realised by an assured directorial vision.’ SCREEN INTERNATIONAL Mascha Schilinski’s Cannes Jury Prize–winner braids past and present, telling the history of a tumultuous century through the lives of four girls who spend their respective youths on the same farm in northern Germany. The farmhouse bears witness to events both global and personal, with two World Wars and a divided nation providing historical backdrops to the girls’ more intimate experiences of growing up. This dramatic and historic film is an ambitious saga, a sensory and poetic epic shot with haunting detail. Winner Jury Prize 2025 Cannes Film Festival
‘A truly provocative anti-romance that’s funny, honest, strangely touching.’ THE FILM STAGE Timid, unassuming Colin (Harry Melling) is swept away from his dreary suburban existence when he meets the handsome, enigmatic biker (Alexander Skarsgård) who takes him on as his submissive. Navigating his new role, Colin learns about its pleasures and pains, and in the process understands his own boundaries. Pillion is not your typical queer love story. It’s messy, erotic and sometimes uncomfortable. But it’s also sexy, tender and surprisingly funny. Sensitively directed, with captivating performances, this is a dom com you’ll gladly submit to. On the grounds of a medieval German university town looms an imposing Ginkgo biloba, a tree whose longevity stands in marked contrast to three intimate, human-scaled stories. Unfolding in 1908, 1972 and 2020, this tender, enchanting and wholly engrossing drama, recounts three stories that are connected to and observed by the majestic tree over the course of a century. Formally audacious and texturally varied, Oscar-nominated director Ildikó Enyedi’s unclassifiable film is a singular meditation on how we connect to the natural world, and to each other.
