RESTART A HEART DAY

minutes after a cardiac arrest are critical, and knowing what to do can double or even triple someone’s chance of survival.” SIMPLE SKILLS, LIFESAVING IMPACT Last season, 57% of drownings in Queensland occurred more than 1km away from patrolled locations - highlighting just how important it is for everyday people to have the confidence to act in an emergency. Restart a Heart Day helps bridge that gap, giving Queenslanders hands-on experience with compression-only CPR and familiarisation with defibrillators (AEDs). The sessions were free, open to all ages, and designed for easy participation - no bookings, no pressure, just vital skills that could make a life-saving difference. LIFESAVERS LEADING THE WAY SLSQ’s regional trainers worked alongside volunteer lifesavers and professional lifeguards to deliver sessions across the state. “You don’t have to be a lifesaver to save a life,” Tonya added. “Even a few minutes of learning can help keep someone alive.” LOOKING AHEAD SLSQ will continue promoting CPR and First Aid education across Queensland, encouraging people to book a certified course through the organisation’s Education and Training programs. A STATEWIDE EFFORT TO SAVE LIVES This year, free drop-in CPR awareness sessions were hosted at: • Streets Beach, South Bank • Broadbeach SLSC • Noosa SLSC • Emu Park SLSC • Cairns Esplanade Lagoon Plaza • Townsville Picnic Bay SLSC – running in partnership with the Queensland Ambulance Service. Across these locations, hundreds of Queenslanders took the opportunity to learn the basics of CPR - from families and local community members to tourists passing by. At Emu Park SLSC, one participant even drove more than 120 kilometres after hearing about the initiative on the radio, determined to learn CPR after witnessing a recent medical emergency. “That’s exactly what Restart a Heart Day is about,” said SLSQ Member Training Manager, Tonya Sela. “We want people to know that CPR isn’t complicated - it’s something anyone can do.
