3. Nehemiah knew how to pray, and he practiced it! Here is the great cen tral secret of Christian influence in legislation—prayer! It is our greatest weapon. Do you not think that America would be a vastly different and im proved nation today if God’s people had prayed for her leaders as much as they have criticized them? We have much to thank God for here now, but how much we have missed be cause we have failed, to pray. “More hath been wrought by prayer than this world dreams of.” Able prepara tion, faithful living as a background, and mighty prayer as a force, will influence the government to the right. N e h e m i a h wrought wonder's, “by the good hand of my God upon me.” God answered his prayers. Conclusion In civil government, the important thing is conviction; and if convictio*' grips the hearts of men and moves them, they will practice the right, regardless of law. Prayer and faithful ness will help accomplish this. By diligence, by faithfully living our Christianity, by mighty prayer, will Christ have a part in the govern ing of the world. It is only through these means that Christians can ably, continually, and effectually influence legislation. For publishers who make possible thq reading of such straightforward Christian testimony as that provided in Chaplain Willard’s book and in others like it, the Christian public must ever be grateful. The Leathernecks Come Through By Chaplain W. Wyeth Willard “Amid scenes of desolation . . . I lifted up Jesus Christ as the only be gotten Son of God, the Light of the world, the only and sufficient' Saviour. I felt led to invite those whose hearts had been touched by the Holy Spirit to surrender their lives unconditionally to Him.” “I preached the gospel as usual.” “Thirty-seven . . . forty-two . . . one hundred thirty officers and men, some with tears streaming down their f a c e s , surrendered to Jesus Christ.” These excerpts reveal the man. Landing under the fire' at Gavutu, Tanambogo, Tulagi, Guadalcanal, air’d Tarawa, he preached and lived Christ through the now historic Solomon islands Campaign. He has* buried

CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOR [ Continued from Page 31] find a strong lesson in Christian influ ence over legislation. 1. Nehemiah was a Jew in a Gentile nation. By diligent effort and faith fulness to God, he had gained an education and ability which brought him into the king’s presence and ser vice. Today, it is sadly true that many of our influential leaders are not Chris tians. More tragic yet is the fact that when able.leaders are sought for in Christian ranks, few can “fill the bill.” I do not mean that there are no great and able Christian men. But the num ber is small. Young people, let us not be satisfied with “small things.” Daniel, a slave boy, became prime minister under four kings. “Dare to be a Daniel”—in ability and influence. 2. Nehemiah was no sluggard. He did his work the best he knew how, and cheerfully. He was honest and faithful. We live in a soft age. Anything goes. I think God must often be ashamed of the slovenly work and walk of some of His children. But if we do our work well, “as unto the Lord, and not unto men,” we shall make a mark of Influence, even upon our leaders. Fleming H. Revell Anniversary From the office of the President, Wil liam R. Barbour, word has come of the observance of the seventy-fifth anni versary of the founding of the Flem ing H, Revell Company, one of the first independent religious publishing com panies in America. The headquarters of the firm were in Chicago until 1904. Since that time, 158 Fifth Avenue, New York City, has been the center of the company’s operations. Throughout the years, a notable list of authors has been represented in -Revell catalogs. It is encouraging to know that many volumes on the com pany^ present list have been printed and sold year after year. For exam ple, Fanny Crosby's Story of Ninety- Four Years, has enjoyed twenty edi tions; it was first published in 1915. One of the latest titles is The Leath ernecks Come Through, by Chaplain W. Wyeth Willard, reviewed elsewhere in this issue of THE KING’S BUSI NESS. “It is typical of the \books which we are issuing during these critical days,” comments President Barbour.

probably as many men killed iri action as any other Navy chaplain. That he loves men for Christ’s sake is evi denced by the numerous references to individuals. For his heroic devotion to the needs of his men, Chaplain Willard received the Navy Legion of Merit medal with a citation by Admiral Chester Nimitz. An example of accu rate reporting, the book is, in the main, as Lt. Col. P. Van Ness points out, “a picture o f . . . battles [seen] through the eyes of a minister of the gospel.” Powerfully written, it should lead the reader to increased devotion to Christ. 224 pages.
