Assessment You will be assessed by exams for a few units, as well as coursework for the remainder, which will include tasks such as presentations, discussions, role play, essays, reports, fact sheets, science experiments and practical duties. Progression After successfully completing this course you will able to progress to undergraduate courses, such as an HND in Animal Management or FdSc/BSc degrees at university. Alternatively, you can also choose to apply for a range of positions within the animal care industry, as well as Apprenticeships. Entry Requirements Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above or a relevant Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care (with an overall Distinction/Distinction* grade). Other relevant qualifications or experience may also be accepted. Entry to the course is subject to a successful interview. You must also have evidence of recent tetanus vaccination.
Overview If you would love to work with animals and learn more about their fascinating lives, this is the course for you. It could lead to a job within the pet industry, wildlife rehabilitation, veterinary nursing and animal welfare roles or further study. You will gain extensive hands-on experience with four categories of animals over the two years: large animals, companions, rodents and exotic animals. You’ll work with animals on and offsite and undertake a minimum of 150 hours of work experience over the duration of the course. Structure On this course, you will study: – Principles of health and safety – Undertake and review work-related experience in the land-based industries
– Animal health and husbandry – Animal feeding and nutrition – Animal behaviour and communication
– Biological systems of animals – Animal welfare and breeding – Exotic animal health and husbandry – Animal nursing – Small animal rehabilitation There is also the opportunity to retake GCSE Mathematics if required. Teaching & learning The course offers a range of facilities including an animal unit providing access to many animals including rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, ferrets, rats, mice, snakes, lizards, tortoises and a host of other rodents and exotic species. The course will be taught by a variety of means including lectures, visiting speakers, trips, group work and work placement opportunities.
