Journalism A Levels: A good combination would be an English A Level and two from a wide range of subjects from Humanities through to Arts, Social Sciences or Sciences. Vocational: UAL: Creative Media Production, Level 3 Diploma. Law A Levels: An essay-based subject such as English Literature or History, plus at least one other academic subject, is advisable for students with strong academic potential. A Level Law is not required but is valued by universities and provides good insight into studying law as an undergraduate. Vocational: BTEC extended diploma in Applied Psychology, Criminology and Law A Levels: Chemistry and Biology with another academically rigorous subject will keep most medical, dentistry and vet schools open to you: Cambridge looks for Maths or Physics as the third A Level for both courses and Glasgow requires Maths or Physics as the third subject for medicine and prefers it for veterinary medicine. There are an increasing number of medical schools which will now accept Psychology as a second science: check the Medical Schools Council website (www.medschools.ac.uk) for the latest information. Dentistry schools are currently less flexible in this respect (www. dentalschoolscouncil.ac.uk). Many medical, dentistry and vet schools want English, Maths and Science GCSEs at grade 6 / 7 or above. Vocational: A small number of ‘gateway’ course options for medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine accept students with vocational backgrounds. Applied Science Level 3 extended diploma is accepted by some medical schools, and the advanced extended diploma in Animal Management (Science) is currently accepted by the RVC for its vet gateway course provided the appropriate science modules are covered, but always check directly with a university as entry requirements can change at any point in a year. could be a good option. Nursing A Levels: Biology and any two from Psychology, Sociology, Chemistry or Mathematics. GCSE Science (4+) will be needed. Vocational: Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Health & Social Care or the Health & Nursing T Level, will keep some options open to you or a combination of Level 3 BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science with two accompanying A Level subjects such as Psychology and Sociology. Police & Fire Service Entry to the police is via a degree or a degree Apprenticeship, so Level 3 qualifications are essential. Firefighters do not need Level 3 qualifications but it is a highly competitive career path so taking Level 3 qualifications is a good way of ensuring you keep other options open if needed. Selection for both careers is based on more than just academic qualifications so do your research and think about joining the relevant cadets. A Levels: Useful subjects can include Sociology, Psychology, Criminology, Law or PE. Vocational: Level 3 Extended Diploma in Public Services, Sport, Applied Psychology, Criminology and Law or Forensic Science and Criminal Investigation could be suitable choices. Teaching A Levels: To keep options open, include at least one subject which is related to a primary/ secondary national curriculum subject, for example: Art, English, Geography, History, Mathematics, Music, PE or a Science. Vocational: The Education & Childcare T Level is one option for students who know they want to specialise in Early Years (3-7 years), Primary or SEN teaching. GCSE English, Mathematics and Science at grade 4 or above are essential to progress into primary teaching.
