Assessment This course is assessed through a coursework portfolio and an externally set assignment. Progression Many students wishing to pursue art & design further progress onto Higher Education or Apprenticeships within creative sectors. You will be able to develop a portfolio fit for direct entry to Degree, HND or pre- degree Foundation courses. This course has prepared past students for pathways including graphic design, illustration, typography, digital media, computer animation, computer games design, advertising, fine art and architecture. Entry Requirements Five GCSEs at grade 4 including English Language and Mathematics. You should also have studied a related subject such as graphic design, art and design, photography or textiles at GCSE level. Evidence of creative ability must be shown at your interview in the form of a portfolio of art and design work. It may be possible to gain entry to the qualification without a GCSE in an Art related subject by submitting a portfolio showcasing your practical work at interview.
Overview This course provides the opportunity for you to develop your creative potential as a graphic designer or graphic illustrator through a wide area of study. Be it advertising, campaigns or branding, graphic communication is integral to everyday life. Focusing on the use of text and image to communicate ideas, you’ll produce practical explorations alongside critical analysis in areas including illustration, typography, advertising, packaging design and design for print. Structure Coursework portfolio In your first year, you will complete several guided projects and design workshops. Recent live projects have included a children’s vector illustration book displayed in a children’s ward at QA Hospital and hand- drawn expressive typography formulating unique ‘alphabets’, exploring letter construction. During your second year, you will have the opportunity to develop a personal investigation within a subject area and specialism of your choice, developing an extensive and personal portfolio of work. Externally set assignment You will select from starting points issued by the exam board. During this period you will complete preparatory work and culminate the assignment with 15 hours of supervised time where the focus is on developing ideas and completing final outcomes independently.
