The wonders of walking for wellness

Walking does more than help us get from one place to another. It also helps keep us healthy, both physically and mentally. Two of the best benefits of walking for fitness are that you don’t need to be athletic, and it’s free. All you need are comfortable clothes and sneakers.

10 reasons why you should walk more. Walking can: 1. Boost your energy 2. Burn calories 3. Fill your body with feel-good hormones 4. Improve sleep

Staying motivated The beauty of walking is that there are so many ways and places you can do it. You can follow the same routine every day or mix it up. To keep boredom at bay: Chat on the phone. Listen to a podcast or Look for trees, flowers, or animals along the way. Meet up with a friend. Savor the silence. Snap photos and post what you see on social media.

5. Keep your heart strong 6. Lower the risk of disease 7. Melt away stress

8. Strengthen muscles and bones 9. Support the immune system 10. Tone your legs.

Try going in the opposite direction. Vary your pace, from medium to brisk

Getting started When you’re first starting out, it helps both physically and mentally to break your walks into smaller ones. Shorter walks are also a good way to fit exercise into a busy schedule. Aim for 150 minutes of exercise a week. Start with 10–15 minutes once or twice a day, then slowly increase your time and distance.

At work, you can:

Have walking meetings. Use the restroom or break room furthest from your work station. Schedule a walking workout with a friend. Walk over to your co-worker to ask a question.

Alcohol misuse: Know the signs and get support

Have you ever wondered if you might have a problem with alcohol? The signs aren’t always easy to spot. Alcohol misuse can significantly impact your health and even turn into addiction, which is why it’s important to start taking control as soon as possible.

Alcohol basics

What to do next

If you recognized any of those signs as things you experience, take action. • Talk to your doctor and be open and honest about your alcohol use so they can provide the care you need. • Consider finding local or online groups you can join for support.

• The CDC recommends no more than two alcoholic drinks a day for men, and no more than one for women. • One drink is defined as: 1 beer, 8 oz. of malt beverage, or 5 oz. of wine or liquor

Alcohol’s impact on your health

• Drinking alcohol can cause you to have accidents or injuries, and long-term it can also raise your risk of cancer, liver disease, heart disease, and other serious conditions. • Whether your alcohol use falls within the CDC’s recommended guidelines or not, remember that less is always better. Drinking less or not drinking at all lowers your health risks.

Know the signs of misuse

These are just a few signs that you may have an issue with alcohol: • You can’t stop drinking, even when you want to stop • You hide your alcohol use from others • You need to increase the amount of alcohol you drink to get your usual “buzz” • You are having problems that start with using alcohol, like getting into accidents or arguments • You neglect other things in your life, like work or family, because you prioritize drinking

You deserve to be your healthiest self. Realizing that alcohol is affecting your life and seeking help and support is not a sign of weakness—it’s a sign of strength.

NOVEMBER Diabetes Awareness Month

Chances are, you know someone who has diabetes. It might even be you. Diabetes is one of the most common disorders in the U.S. It affects about 1 in 9 Americans. Diabetes raises your risk for serious health problems. It can damage the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and heart, and it is linked to some types of cancer.

Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high. Glucose is your body’s main source of energy. Normally, a hormone made by the pancreas called insulin helps glucose get into your cells to be used for energy. If you have diabetes, your body doesn’t make enough insulin or use insulin properly. Glucose then stays in your blood and doesn’t reach your cells. Anyone can get type 2 diabetes, even children. Here are some ways to prevent diabetes if you have a family history ⟶

Understanding Health Insurance Terminology

Your monthly premium is the combination of what the company pays and what you pay for your benefit plans each month. Your portion of the benefit premium is deducted from each paycheck. The per pay period rate is what you will see be deducted from each paycheck. WHAT IS A MONTHLY PREMIUM?

You can now use the new Plan Comparison Tool in Alight to see a side-by-side of the plans we offer. This will give you a clearer picture of what the deductibles, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximums are for each plan to make an informed decision. When selecting our High Deductible Health Plan, you have access to enroll into a Health Savings Account. This is like a debit card that can be used for health expenses like copays and out-of-pocket expenses until you meet your annual deductible. You elect a pre-tax payroll deduction amount and you also receive an annual employer match, if eligible. Unused funds can also be invested with this account to grow tax-free. HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNT Why an HSA? HOW TO COMPARE PLANS New Tools To Help Each visit your doctor or specialist will require you to pay a small co-pay at the time of the visit. This can range from $10-$50 each visit. WHAT IS A CO-PAY?

WHAT IS A DEDUCTIBLE?

A deductible is the minimum threshold you must reach before the insurance company will start paying for their portion/percentage of co- insurance for your health expenses. You will pay 100% of health expenses out of pocket at the beginning of the year until you meet the deductible amount for the plan.

WHAT IS COINSURANCE?

WHAT IS AN OUT-OF-POCKET MAXIMUM? Co-insurance kicks in after you have met your annual deductible where the insurance plan will begin to cover a percentage of your bills - for example you pay 20% and they pay would pay 80%. Once you hit your out-of-pocket maximum for the year, the insurance plan will cover 100% of in-network expenses beyond that point until the plan year ends.

Supplementing Your Medical Benefits

CRITICAL ILLNESS INSURANCE

Critical Illness Insurance provides a cash benefit to members who are diagnosed with a Covered Condition such as: Alzheimer’s Disease, Coronary Artery Bypass Graft, Cancer, Heart Attack, Kidney Failure, Major Organ Transplant, and Stroke. When you are diagnosed with a covered condition, submit your claim and you’ll quickly get a check up to $30k. ACCIDENT INSURANCE Accident insurance provides benefits due to covered accidents for initial care, injuries and follow-up care. Benefits up to $15k are paid directly to you, in addition to any other coverage you have. Hospital Indemnity Insurance can complement your health insurance to help you pay for the costs of a hospital stay. The money can also help you pay the out-of-pocket expenses your medical plan may not cover, such as coinsurance, copays, and deductibles. HOSPITAL INDEMNITY INSURANCE

SUPPLEMENTAL LIFE & AD&D INSURANCE

Life insurance pays a lump sum death benefit while AD&D coverage provides benefits to your beneficiary if you suffer loss of life and/or you suffer loss of limb, speech, hearing, or sight as the result of a covered accident. The company covers benefit eligible associates, but you may elect to purchase additional voluntary coverage. You may need to complete MetLife’s Life Statement of Health form within 60 days after enrollment.

SEPTEMBER Delving Into Devices

A lot of studies have shown that the more kids use media, especially around bedtime, the worse their sleep is. But some uses of handheld devices can have benefits. Kids can use video chat to talk with relatives who live far away. Some educational apps and programs designed especially for children can help them in school. So how can parents find a balance? Here are some tips for setting screentime boundaries: Be a role model and limit your own screen time. Create a house rule that limits screen time and enforce it. Give your kids alternatives to screen time. Suggest playing outside, finding a new hobby, or learning a sport. Do other activities together, such as family board games, puzzles, or going for a walk. Create screen-free bedrooms Don't use TV time as reward or punishment (this makes it seem more important to kids) Make meal time = family time

Healthy Social Media Habits for YOU!

Social media puts other people just keystrokes away. This helps some feel like they have more social support. But for others, it can increase isolation and depression. Use Your Time Wisely Spending more time online may be a sign that you’re withdrawing from others. Passively watching what others are doing online can make you feel more isolated. You might feel you’re missing out or being left out. Or it can make you think that other people have better lives than you. Watch for signs of withdrawing from others. Connect Carefully Social media can make substance use behaviors seem normal which can affect both teens and adults. Messages about ‘wine-mom’ culture that link alcohol use with ‘mommy needs a break at the end of the day’ link alcohol with positive self- care. But using alcohol to manage stress is not a healthy coping strategy. Seek Out Help Remember, you don’t need to struggle with mental health problems alone. There’s a common misconception that we can handle our mental health problems on our own, and that they’re not severe enough to warrant medical care. Don’t hesitate to reach out to a health care provider or mental health professional.

AUGUST National Relaxation Day

August 15th is National Relaxation Day. According to Oxford University, when we get stuck in what is called, the “doing-mode”, we initially feel good about getting things done, however, staying in this state of hyperarousal can dysregulate our nervous

system and increase stress. Tips to avoid burnout:

Recognize and respond to signs of stress: Stress manifests as a biological response and may present itself differently in each person (tense muscles, headache, clenched teeth). Regularly practicing stress-relieving strategies, such as going for walks, listening to music or guided meditations, or keeping a diary of your thoughts, can help prevent acute stress from turning into chronic stress. Set boundaries: Feeling unable to establish clear and firm boundaries can lead to an unmanageable workload and eventual burnout. Develop a work-life balance: people feel more motivated and energized when they have time for activities beyond work. Take Breaks/Schedule Days Off: Short breaks throughout the day can help a person relax and recharge and may also be a good time to engage in some mindfulness techniques. Longer breaks throughout the year, such as a few days off, can help people to recharge and return to their responsibilities with a fresh perspective. Remember, vacation/time off is part of your total rewards package, it is there for you to use, when you need it!

What is Mindfulness?

“Mindfulness is about observation without criticism; being compassionate with yourself. When unhappiness or stress hover overhead, rather than taking it personally, you learn to treat them as if they were clouds in the sky, and to observe them with friendly curiosity as they drift past. In essence, mindfulness allows you to catch negative thought patterns before they tip you into a downward spiral. It begins the process of putting you back in control of your life.” Professor Mark Williams - Emeritus Professor of Clinical Psychology, University of Oxford, UK and Founder of the Oxford Mindfulness Foundation

JULY Social Wellness Month

Connecting with other people can be an interesting, exciting, and a healthy part of being human. Moreover, social support is often integral to a person’s physical health and mental well-being. According to the APA, about 30% of Americans feel lonely. The benefits of social support: Self-esteem: Surrounding yourself with people who respect and care about you can lead you to think more highly of yourself, potentially improving your self- esteem. Coping skills: Having social and emotional support can improve your sense of autonomy, potentially making it easier to cope with stressful situations, even on your own. Stress resilience: Research suggests that having social support can make an individual more resilient to stress. Conversely, those with less social support may be more prone to experiencing stress. Feelings of belonging: Social support can give individuals “the feeling of being loved, cared, respected, and belonging to a network of communication.” Physical health: Research suggests that social support can significantly predict the physical health symptoms an individual may experience. Mental health: Research has also shown social support to be a strong predictor of mental health symptoms, such as depression. According to researchers, positive social communication with one’s social network can reduce anxiety and improve feelings of stability.

If you’re looking to form strong connections, you might reconnect with old friends or distant relatives, take up a new hobby, join a club or volunteer. For guidance in cultivating improved social wellness, it may be helpful to work with a licensed therapist through our partner, Rula. Get matched with a professional HERE! Build Healthy Relationships

JUNE Men’s Health Month

This annual observance encourages men and boys to be proactive in their health by implementing healthy living decisions. It's a time to encourage open conversations about mental health, physical well-being, and the importance of regular health check-ups. Far too often, societal expectations and stereotypes can prevent men from seeking help or expressing vulnerability. By fostering empathy within our communities, we can create a more supportive environment where men feel comfortable discussing their health concerns and seeking assistance when necessary.

LIFE WELL LIVED

MAY Mental Health Awareness Month

No matter who you are or your circumstances, life can throw you some curve balls. By practicing emotional coping skills and building a support system you trust, you can help boost your resiliency to better navigate these difficult times.

Tips for boosting your resilience

Practice gratitude and mindfulness. These practices can help keep the positive things in your life top of mind and remind you that not everything is bad. 1. Change your perspective. Instead of feeling like bad things always happen to you, or you can never catch a break, try to tell yourself that your current challenge does not have to decide your future. Leaning into hope can help you maintain a positive mindset. 2. Learn from the past. Look at what activities or people helped you through tough times in the past. You may notice a pattern and be able to develop a plan for dealing with difficult situations in the future. 3. Talk to a professional. If you’re having trouble navigating a situation on your own, reach out to a mental health professional to help you create a strategy for moving forward. 4. Care for your body. Eating a nutritious diet, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep all contribute to better mental health and can help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. When you feel good physically, you have one less barrier to feeling good mentally. 5. Connect with others. Connecting with a group of like-minded people in your community or with empathetic loved ones can help validate your feelings and give you a sense of belonging and purpose. 6. Pursue your goals. Reflect on something you want to accomplish and think about how you can make progress toward that goal each day. 7. Be proactive. If a problem or situation seems particularly overwhelming, make a list of small steps you can take to manage or overcome it and take them on one at a time. 8. #AllBecauseofYou

Learn how to respond to cyberbullying

If your child is being cyberbullied, it’s crucial to act, but the Child Mind Institute suggests taking time to talk through the situation with your child and develop a plan of action together. Your plan might include the following steps: Don’t reply or respond. The bully wants to get a reaction from your child, so it’s best for them and you to stay silent. Collect facts. Take a screenshot or copy and save a message before deleting it. Block and unfriend. Block the number on your child’s phone if it’s a text message. Take the person off their buddy or friends list if it’s through IM or a digital platform. Report it. Consider telling teachers about the situation. If the bullying happens online, it might also happen in person. If the bullying occurred on a website or app, go to that company’s site and look for a way to report it. If the message is a real threat to your child’s safety, contact your local police immediately. As a parent, you’ll also want to: Be supportive. Talk to your child about how they are feeling. They likely feel angry, sad, scared, or ashamed. Assure them that you love them and don’t blame them. Watch for signs of distress. Bullying can impact your child’s mental health. If your child shows signs of anxiety or depression, make an appointment for them with their pediatrician or a mental health professional.

Do you know the difference between the emergency room and an urgent care? Do you know where to go when you are in need of medical care? In general, the emergency room should be visited if the problem is life threatening. Urgent cares should be visited if the problem is non-life-threatening but is too pressing to wait to see your primary care doctor. The key differences between emergency departments and urgent care centers include more than just what you are being seen for. Other differences include the cost, wait times, and hours of operation. Emergency Room or Urgent Care: Key Differences

Know before you go

Generally, the wait times are shorter at urgent care. Insurance companies accept visits to both urgent cares and emergency rooms. However, the average cost for an urgent care visit is $125-$160 whereas the emergency room could cost $400-$2,000 . Emergency rooms are available 24/7 and not all urgent care locations operate 24/7. Check the hours for those nearest you! Ultrasounds, CT scans, and MRIs are generally not offered at an urgent care, but are available at many emergency rooms or hospitals.

Tax Season and Health Savings Accounts (HSA)

Tax Day is looming, and just about everyone is looking for ways to hold onto more of their hard-earned money. If you are enrolled in the Company’s High-deductible Health Plan (HDHP Medical Plan), you are eligible to take advantage of a Health Savings Account (HSA), which allows you to save money on a pre-tax basis and use these funds to pay for healthcare-related expenses without being taxed. Additionally, Montage International contributes funds to your HSA each paycheck , providing “free money” that you can use as needed for eligible healthcare expenses. For a full list of eligible expenses, visit the IRS website here. To change your per paycheck contribution any time, go to your Alight Worklife portal and click Change HSA Contribution on the left-hand menu.

While HSAs can save you money throughout the year on healthcare, there are a few things you can do during tax season to further maximize savings with an HSA, including:

Take advantage of the triple threat – With an HSA, the amount contributed is a part of a triple tax advantage; tax-free contributions, tax-free withdrawals for qualified medical expenses and tax-free interest earned on savings, making it worthwhile to contribute more if possible, to save money on taxes while putting funds away for future expenses. Earn interest – Unlike funds contributed to a Flexible Spending Account (FSA), unused HSA funds can roll over from year to year and collect interest over time, so if you don’t need all the money this year, you can keep it for future expenses. For information on how to get started with investing funds in your HSABank account go here to get started - HSAInvest. Continue contributing – The deadline to contribute to an HSA to maximize savings for 2024 taxes is April 14, 2025. For the 2025 tax year, individuals can contribute up to $4,300, and families have a maximum of $8,550, both an increase over last year’s limits. As in previous years, people 55 and older can contribute an additional $1,000 catch-up. HSA Bank has this handy Tax 101 FAQ to learn more. HSA Bank and Montage International does not provide legal or tax advice. Please contact your tax professional with any tax- related questions.
