Golden Text Illustration M ark 1:17

2. "And he brought him to Jesus" (John 1:42), This was the biggest day’s work Andrew ever did. The rec ord does not reveal that Andrew ever preached any great sermons. He never. Wrote any Scripture. But he led a brother to Christ whom God used to do these things. We have here an inspired illustration of what is the responsi bility of every one who has come to know the Lamb. John and Andrew were among those first to hear the Baptist’s challenge and to respond. Immediately they felt an prge to tell some one else. This is the normal re action of every redeemed soul. The Lamb expects them to be busy intro ducing some “brother” to Himself. They are called to be “fishers of men” 1(Mk. 1:17), or to “catch men” (Lk. 5:10). A question e v e r y Christian should ask of himself occasionally is, “What am I actually doing ih prayer, in giving, and in personal effort to lead some one to Christ?”

the measure in which they follow, learn of, and serve thé Lord. Points and Problems 1. "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin ©f the worldl" (John 1:29). This is one of the great signposts of God erected before the whole world to arrest men’s atten tion. "Behold" is a strong word. It means “to perceive with the eyes, to o b s e r v e , to consider, to weigh, to contemplate.” Be sure to stop in your reading of the Word when you come to any one of these signposts. Another of them is Jesus’ w o r d s, “Verily, verily.” Al.ways something of vast significance follows. When Thomas Boston, a great Scot tish preacher, lay dying, it was an nounced that he would preach to his congregation as usual morning and e v e n i n g . The worshipers gathered from far and near. They assembled about his opened windSw where his bed was drawn close. The sick man sat propped up by pillows, and an nounced as his t e x t : “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world!” The message came as a benediction from heaven. In the evening the congregation assembled again under similar circumstances. He announced his text: “Behold, the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world!” For the second time the congregation was .greatly moved. But after the service was over, the preacher’s daughter took him gently to task b e c a u s e he h a d preached both times from the same text. “Yes, daughter,” he r e p 1i e d, “I preaehed both times on the same text because that is the one thing that people have to do, ‘Behold the Lamb o f God.’ ” That night he passed away. There are three things to behold in this text: (1) “Behold the Lamb." The Lamb is central in the story of the Bible. Think of the story of the offer ing of Isaac, of the Passover, and of Isaiah 53. (2) Behold the mission of the Lamb. He “taketh away the sin of the world.” (3) Behold man's duty. Man’s responsibility is couched in the first word of the text "Behold." The Lamb must be seen with the eye of faith in order to become the personal Saviour.

When I was in Australia, I went to see a woman, a cripple. When she was eighteen, she was seized with a dread malady, and the doctor said that to save her life he must take off her foot. The disease extended to both legs and. arms, till, after successive amputations, all that remained was the trunk of her body. For fifteen years she had been in that condition. She lay in bed one day and asked what she could do, a woman virtually' dismembered, with scarcely a joint in-her body. Then an inspiration came, and she asked a friend to come, who was a carpenter, and he fitted a pad to her shoulder, and then to that another and a fountain pen, and she began to write letters. Remember, .when you write, you write with your arm. But as there .was no joint, she had to write with her entire body. When I
