to each of us not to allow anything to keep us from remaining true to Christ at all times.

they mourned the One they had thought was Messiah. But love took them „ to the tomb, and when Mary Magdalene arrived there early on the first day of the week, she found the stone removed. Surprised, she ran to tell the other disciples, saying, “They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre.” Peter and John set forth to verify the report and found, just as Mary had said, the body of Jesus was gone. The graveclothes were still there and all in place. It was a mystery to the dis ciples not to find the body, but it would have been a disaster had they found what they sought—the dead form of Jesus. There Would have been no mystery and no perplexity had they listened attentively to the words of Jesus, and had they remembered their Scriptures. It may seem strange to us that these disciples were so unaware of the teaching of their Scriptures, but if we ourselves were not so ignorant of what the Bible teaches we would Under stand much that now perplexes us.- II. T he D istress (11-15) Mary was overcome with sorrow. Her beloved Master had been crucified, anii she had . been denied even the small comfort of ministering to His dead body. She was distressed be cause she knew not what had become of His body. Her sorrow was deep and intense» He was gone and nothing elsfe mat tered. Even angels could not satisfy the hunger of her soul. In ordinary times and under familiar circum stances Mary wopld have felt honored and comforted by a visit from angels, but with her Master gone,1nothing could satisfy her. Here was darkness without light, loVe without its object, and grief without balm. Well would it be today if Christians felt the same yearning for the Person of their Lord. Blinded by tears, Mary did not recog nize the Lord when He appeared to her, but thought Him to be the gardener. Her distress, like her perplexity, was based on ignorance of the Scriptures and forgetfulness of the Lord’s words when He said He would rise the third day. Nothing can .take the place of real study of the Bible and a heart belief in what it teaches. III. T he S atisfaction (16, 17) When the risen Lord spoke her name, Mary immediately recognized
