NOTES on Christian Endeavor

FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

APRIL 4, 1943 THE GOLDEN RULE: WH AT IT MEANS TO ME M atthew 7:12 By Gene W. Fussell Introduction “I live by the Golden Rule,” is often the answer of an unbeliever when asked whether he is saved. He is bas ing his hope of heaven on . his own good deeds, and he is like a certain five-dollar bill. It had done a lot of good—paid the widow’s rent, bought food for the hungry, made a church treasurer happy when he found it on the plate; but when it came back to the bank whose name it bore, the tel ler threw it out. It was counterfeit, and all its good deeds had not inade it pass the bank where its real char acter was discovered. Endeavoring to live by the Golden Rule will not atone for sin, nor gain us an entrance into heaven. Let us see just what the Golden Rule does mean. For Those Who Have Topics I. IT DOES NOT MEAN SALVATION. Keeping the Golden Rule is not the way to get to heaven. Salvation is a free gift. It c a n n o t be bought or earned. But after one is saved, he does have some rules to follow which will make him acceptable to God and to men. •One is to love God with all his heart, soul, strength, and mind (Mk. 12:30). But, in doing that, he must be right toward his fellow man. ‘‘As ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise” (Lk. 6:31).
