The telephone company, foreseeing that great emergency loads may fall upon its West Coast facilities, has been making careful and costly prep arations for this time of special need. Toll cables have been multiplied, and where practicable have been buried underground as a protection “ against physical injury and the elements.” In a spiritual sense, the Lord’s peo ple likewise need to be prepared for threatened periods of special stress. In this instance, however, the actual con dition is far better than the earthly analogy -of the telephone company’s forward-looking plans. The infinite God knows all the future and all the pressure that will come to each one of His children. There is no emergency for which He has not provided, and our part in keeping the way clear is to obey Him. His Word has revealed how we are to keep our communica tion lines in repair. Let us pay the price with glad promptness. fection will be, in comparison with this, actually as hatred. This strong language in Luke is used in order to make plain how intense and all-sur passing must be the believer’s allegi ance to his Lord. It is in no way contradictory to the passage which exhorts believers to love one .another. N E W ! Walks with Our Lord Through John’s Gospel Volumes I and II By Erling C. Olsen

The Bible Book By Book By William Stuart

This volume, written by an Instruc tor in Bible in the Grand Rapids (Michigan) Christian High School, is composed of brief outlines and re marks on the sixty-six books of the Bible. Each chapter closes with a list of questions. This work will prove beneficial, especially to younger Chris tians, in their study of the Bible. 115 pages. Zondervan Pub. House, Grand Rapids, Mich. Paper. Price 60 cents. To a group of fourteen meditations, given originally by the author as ra dio Bible talks, there has been added a section of over forty pages contain ing poems and brief prose selections that have been a blessing to those who heard them read. Mr. Loveless is the director of the radio department of the Moody Bible Institute, and in this connection his Scriptural and per sonally applied messages have been appreciated by thousands of hearers.- Out of the testing caused by a period of serious illness, Mr. Loveless has brought to his pre^nt writing an as surance and a sweetness that are ap pealing. 121 pages. Wm. B. Eerdmans Pub. Co., Grand Rapids, Mich. Cloth. Price $1.00. New Sunrise Meditations By Wendell P. Loveless every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God,” the Christian in prayer spends time “wait ing” in the secret place of fellowship. It is a vital exercise. Does the effort to maintain com munication pay? It is highly profit able to the telephone corporation to make its great outlay of money for maintenance of service, for during the year in question, the company did a $140,359,623 business in local and toll revenues. In the case of the Christian today, however, the question is not so much, “Does it pay?” as, “How dare we fail to pay the price?” BIG BUSINESS SAYS [ Continued from Page 97]

This two-volume set presents in per manent form the richly practical meditations originally given as radio talks covering a period of,'two years. The author is a prominent business man, the Executive. Vice-President of the Fitch Investors Service in New York, and also a leader in Christian work. His writing combines clear and scholarly interpretation of the Word with that directness which one lay man may have in speaking to an other. Not intended as a commentary on the fourth Gospel, these books are nevertheless full of spiritual gems that will make study of John’s Gospel increasingly a delight. Two volumes; 651 pages in all. Zondervan Pub. Co., Grand Rapids, Mich. Cloth. Price $3.00 per set. Untranslatable Riches From the Greek New Testament By Kenneth S. Wuest Fourth in a series of Word Studies in the Greek New Testament for the English reader, this volume will, like the others, be welcomed eagerly. One does not require a knowledge of the Greek language in order to pursue these studies with interest. At the same time a Greek scholar will find them highly thought-provoking. The author’s purpose in this work is -to point out that often, in the effort to translate a Greek word by a single English word, the translation may be correct, but it may lack the full-orbed meaning of the passage. He takes up several sections of Scripture, having to do with Paul’s Doctrine of Verbal Inspiration, Paul’s Last Words to Timothy, Hebrews 6, and the Ministry of the Holy Spirit, and uncovers a wealth of usually un observed richness of interpretation. The work is thoroughly readable; in fact, fascinating. T h e concluding pages furnish an index for the four volumes in the series. 140 pages. Wm. B. Eerdmans Pub. Co., Grand Rapids, Mich. Cloth. Price $1.00.
