Accon Marine is one of the leaders in the pop-up (and pull-up) world of boat cleats. They spring into action at the press of a button for immediate use, then retract flush to the deck with a simple push down to lock them back in place. Crafted from durable marine-grade 316 stainless steel for exceptional strength and corrosion resistance, Accon 202-Series Pop-Up Cleats come in polished or brushed finishes to complement existing hardware. Accon also offers optional waterproof- ing cups for each model. Every cleat is shipped with a backing plate that doubles as a cut-out template. Installation requires simply scribing the outline, cutting the mounting hole and securing the backing plate and the cleat in place. PULL-UP CLEATS

Pull-up cleats come in a variety of formats, ranging from flush-mount versions, to easy-to-install surface-mount types. This design elimi- nates any potential tripping or snagging hazards on narrow decks and walkways. Integrated recesses in the base and on either side of the cleat make it easy to simply pull back up when needed. Many manufacturers offer an optional waterproofing cup to eliminate unwanted runoff below deck, which is a critical feature. Water intrusion is the biggest challenge when installing the majority of pop-up and pull- up cleat designs and care must be taken to channel that water back onto the deck via watertight tubes and not into the bilge area

SURFACE-MOUNT FOLDING CLEATS I was surfing through the BoatOutfitters.com website recently and I stumbled across a unique design…a surface-mounted folding cleat. Some of the key features of this type of open base boat cleat are: •It mounts easily on your boat with no cut-outs required, making installation simple. •It locks down when not being used and springs up when the release button is pushed. •There is no need for drain tubes or drain receptacles to prevent unwanted leakage down into the bilge or over other critical ships’systems or electronics.

•It’s manufactured from durable, 316 marine-grade, brightly-polished, cast stainless steel. •Mounting options include stud-mounted with hidden fasteners (length of stud is 1½”); or thru-bolted (with visible screw holes).

TIPS FOR MOUNTING & SIZING BOAT CLEAT •Never screw your cleats into a fiberglass surface; thru-bolt them with backing plates and locking nuts for maximum strength. •Be sure that no unwanted saltwater or rain runoff can intrude into the inner bilge area of your boat after installation. Caulk the bolt holes. •All boats 20-feet and up should have a minimum of six easy-access cleats, with two aft, two amidships and two in the bow.

•Cleats should be sized properly to fit your boat and the line diameter that you will be using to secure it dockside. Boats from 17- to-20 feet will typically employ 3/8”dock line, whereas boats from 20-to-30 feet will go for the ½”diameter stuff. One popular nautical rule states that you need 1-inch of cleat length for every 1/16”of line diameter. Using this formula, 3/8”line (6/16) will require a 6-inch cleat and ½”line (8/16) requires an 8-inch cleat.
