THE IMPORTANCE OF HEALTH CARE POWER OF ATTORNEY CODY’S TAKE ON ASSET PROTECTION

of attorney. Last month, I shared what I know about a last will and testament. So this time, I want to talk about health care power of attorney and why it’s one of the three documents Rick and Ricky want you to have. If something were to happen to you and you could no longer make health or medical decisions for yourself, a health care power of attorney would designate who should make those decisions. Without it, this decision could be left up to someone you would not have picked, like a family member you don’t have a strong relationship with. With the proper language included in the health care power of attorney document, the person you designate will be able to bypass HIPAA privacy laws, so they can make informed decisions about your condition. Without it, doctors and hospitals will not be able to share your health care information, even if it’s with a family member you love. Don’t put your family in this situation. This is a document you create with an attorney, and it can change and adapt over time. Let’s say you get a new house, for example. You might want to revisit your will to ensure this asset is protected.

This plan should include three very important documents: a last will and testament, a health care power of attorney, and a durable power
