Recreation Guide - Spring/Summer 2022

Changes to Summer Pool Operations !

Effective July 2, 2022 there are important changes in our summer pool operations, including the cancellation of a number of programs, due to a shortage of qualified instructors and lifeguards. Many pools in our area and across the province are facing similar staffing shortages. Group swimming lessons will only be available for our youngest, most-vulnerable swimmers. All Swimmer 4 - 10 lessons are cancelled. See pages 40 - 53 in this guide for updated swim lesson schedules. Why is there a shortage of staff? Typically, our summer programming includes Lifesaving Society classes in the indoor pool at the Community Centre, as well as daily openings of Lake Lisgar Waterpark. This year, however, we are experiencing a shortage of qualified instructors and lifeguards. Despite our best recruiting efforts, we are not currently able to fully staff both facilities. In order to maintain operations at Lake Lisgar Waterpark, we have made the difficult decision to reduce program offerings at the indoor pool. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many lifeguards left their positions due to extended facility closures. Many of these individuals have not returned to the pool even now that facilities have reopened. Additionally, many aspiring lifeguards have been unable to complete their training over the past two years due to COVID-19 related closures. As a result, the number of vacant positions across the province has skyrocketed. We appreciate your understanding.
