Message from Executive
2023 Issue 10
October 2023
We seem to be speeding towards the end of the year, with longer days and warmer weather. Oc- tober 14 was Allied Health Professionals Day and I would like to recognise all of the wonderful AH professionals at Ryde Hospital that do so much for our patients. Congratulations to Sarah Drake, Head of Department for Speech Pathology for winning NSLHD Allied Health leader of the year. I would also like to thank our administration staff for ‘ Asking the Question ’ and achieving a 99.9% completion rate of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander status in the patient registration. This help us provide the best care for our patients and really impacts patient outcomes.

Redevelopment at Ryde
As you know demolition of the Chattery, Building 11 and CAReS buildings h as started to create space for the new hospital buildings. Thank you for your patience and under- standing as we complete these essential works. We are pleased to advise that the second planning applica- tion has been lodged with the Department of Planning and Environment. This means the plans for the detailed design, m ain demolition works, additional car parking and main con- struction works are on public exhibition, providing the oppor- tunity for feedback until Wednesday 25 October, 2023. View the plans and have your say here.
Grannie Smith Festival The annual Granny Smith Festival was held on Saturday 21st October 2023. Ryde Hospital and the Redevelopment had a joint stall to promote Ryde Hospital. Overall, we had over 250 people stop by at our stall, gained 28 new subscribers to receive our newsletter and 9 young people participate in the giveaway. The winner guessed 369 lollies so we will be in touch next week to provide their prize of a private tour of Ryde Hospital. A huge thank you to all of the staff who gave up their time to participate, special shout out to Net- tie Vogel and Jarinya Soieprasounk who ’ s Man- darin speaking skills were greatly appreciated.

Pink Ladies Donation
A special thank you to the wonderful work the Pink Ladies do for Ryde Hos- pital all year round. In particular, this month the Ryde Hospital Pink Ladies kind donation of a new electric patient transport chair. The electric patient transport chair will be used by wardspersons to transport patients within the hospital, for example from wards to imaging. The chairs will benefit both patients and staff by improving the patients experience in hospital, and reduce manual han- dling risks for staff. The new patient transport chair was gratefully re- ceived by Rado Nikic, and the wardspersons team on behalf of Ryde
National Carers Week
This month Ryde celebrated National Carers Week. It was an opportunity to raise awareness, recognise and acknowledge the 2.65 million Aus- tralians who provide care and support to a family member or friend. There are over 130,000 carers across our district alone. The majority are working carers, balancing care to someone alongside employment and other commitments. I would also like to remind staff members who are carers themselves that additional support is available to them including special leave provi- sions as well as flexible work ar- rangements. As always, the Employee Assistance Program is available to support both staff members and their families. To celebrate the Carer Support Ser- vice had a display in the hospital foy- ers engaging with carers and staff.

NSQHSS Accreditation
Quality & Safety Corner
Ryde Hospital performed extremely well in 2022, achieving hospital - wide accreditation against the Na- tional Safety & Quality Health Service Standards (NSQHSS) with no recommendations. The Assessors were extremely impressed with the strong safety culture and the commitment of all staff to provide the best possible care and services to patients, carers and the community.
From July 2023, mandatory Short Notice Accreditation Assessments were introduced. This means we don ’ t know when the Assessors will next visit Ryde Hospital. We will receive just 24 hours notice be- fore accreditation assessment. Once on - site, the Assessors will spend most of their time visiting wards and departments, observing work practices, and talking to patients, visitors and staff about the care and services provided at Ryde. We need to be always ready for a snap assessment at any time. We could be assessed any time between now and December 2024. Start preparing NOW..!
Start talking about accreditation NOW ..!
The National Standards / Accreditation should be on the Agenda of your team meetings. This provides an opportunity for teams to understand the National Standards and to clarify what they need to do to be ready for an accreditation assessment.
What can you do to prepare for Accreditation?
All Staff - Check out the resources on the Ryde Hospital Accreditation intranet page
- Learn about the NSQHS Standards by clicking on the links for each standard
- Read the Standard Summaries to learn how the Standards are applied in Ryde Hospital

Patient Experience - Heart Felt Thank you
I would like to share with you a message from a patient about their journey through Ryde Hospital, and their compliments in relation to the wonderful care and attention I received at Ryde hospital after suffering a fall and fracturing my wrist. It is a wonderful reminder of why we should all be so proud of the work we do at Ryde every day. I was conveyed by ambulance to ER at Ryde Hospital where I was attended to immediately and had my wrist X - rayed within approximately 15 minutes. A very short time after that I was advised that sur- gery to insert a plate and pins would be required. I remained in ER for a period of time, however due to other trauma cases presenting, the operation was not able to be performed that evening. I was released with a temporary cast and scheduled for day surgery the next day. I have nothing but the highest praise for all of the staff at Ryde Hospital who took care of me not only in ED and day surgery, but at every point from administration, up to and including the follow up at the Fracture Clinic and Physiotherapy.

Library Update
New Voluntary Assisted Dy- ing (VAD) Guide from NSLHD Libraries The Parliament of New South Wales passed the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2022 (the Act) on 19 May 2022. The Act will allow eligible people the choice to access voluntary as- sisted dying in NSW from 28 November 2023. Voluntary As- sisted Dying will be embedded within each local health dis- trict's end - of - life care pathways
and patients must be informed about all options available to them including palliative care, and other treatment options in line with their goals of care. NSLHD Libraries have created a Library Guide with a selec- tion of available resources for Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD). In this guide you will find a list of key online re- sources, a selection of recom- mended books, and RSS
feeds from various sources in- cluding BMC Medical Ethics and The Conversation. NSLHD Libraries supports the work of NSW Health and the NSLHD by providing infor- mation resources and services to assist healthcare practition- ers in delivering the highest quality care. For additional assistance, please contact your NSLHD Libraries. We are here to help.
Infection Prevention & Control
Fundamentals of Infection Prevention was the theme for the International In- fection Prevention and Control Week, celebrated last week, 15 to 21 October. The NSLHD IPAC team created word puzzles encouraging all staff to partici- pate in understanding infection prevention is everyone's business. Joyce and Carolyn showcased the fundamentals of infection prevention during the week in the front foyer of Ryde Hospital. An invitation was extended to patients and visitors as an opportunity to discuss and provide information on preventing infection while receiving treatment or visiting. In speaking with patients and their visitors it was encouraging to know they are invested in contributing to their health outcomes. Health workers can encourage patients/visitors to contribute to infection pre- vention simply through conversation and or providing information on funda- mentals like hand hygiene and cough etiquette. Did you know the NSLHD IPAC Service has resources available for patients and their carers/family explaining how they can participate in infection preven- tion and control. The resources are available as brochures on all inpatient wards or downloaded via the QR Posters on all inpatient wards. To access and order brochures visit the NSLHD IPAC intranet site, for Consumer Information http://intranet.nslhd.health.nsw.gov.au/ClinicalNet/cgu/QSP/ipac/Pages/ Consumer - Information.aspx As always, contact Joyce or Carolyn, Monday - Friday for any IPAC questions or guidance you or consumers may have.

Salary Packaging
Salary Packaging Changes from 01 November 2023 As part of the 2023/24 Salary and wages negotiations, it was agreed that HSU award staff would receive a larger share of the tax savings benefit for staff electing to take up salary packaging. Previously the benefit was split 50% to the employee, 50% to the hospital. The changes effective from 1 November will increase the benefit to employees to 70% and reducing the hospital ’ s share to 30% from your next pay post 1 November. For those who have taken up salary pack- aging, please see the table below of the increase to your take home pay as a result of these changes. Both staff and the hospital benefit from salary packaging, so we really encourage taking up salary pack- aging. For staff it increases your net take home pay because you are paying less income tax by the amount you salary sacrifice at your marginal tax rate. Full time staff can claim up to $9,009 per annum for non GST expenses e.g. mortgage payments, rent, school fees or $8,172 for GST able expenses e.g. credit card bills, child care fees. Further savings can be achieved by taking up the $2,650 meal and entertainment package.
