re IMAGINING 2020 OLMSTED PLEIN AIR INVITATIONAL …

in its 6th year, Georgia’s Olmsted Plein Air Invitational is one of the most prestigious plein air competitions in the country. It is an exhibition and experience that explores how we can nurture our mental and emotional wellbeing through interacting with art. Evidence shows that taking time to savor experiences, such as looking at art, can increase our mental wellbeing. In this exhibition, we invite you to slow down and connect with art mindfully, moment by moment. We and our Invited Artists from all over the country thank you for your generosity and ask for your continued support and enthusiasm for keeping Olmsted Plein Air Invitational alive. Meet the Artists, Explore their Creativity and Happy Collecting!

AT L ANTA ’ S 6 T H ANNUA L OLMST ED PLE IN AIR INVI TAT IONA L re IMAGINING

re IMAGINING 2020 exists due to the dedication and hard work of people who love art, are committed to producing a world class show and seek to highlight the “Best in Class” plein air painters in the United States.

T he official 2020 Olmsted Plein Air Invitational ended at midnight Friday, July 31 and the July paintings sales allowed us to make a significant donation to Good Samaritan Health Center! We are thrilled to announce that several of our Artists have extended their listing agreement with the goal to sell 10 paintings in August. For our Collectors this means: 1. Artists who have opted to extend will continue to have a Library Gallery. 2. Library Galleries during the month of August may include all new fresh work, unsold work and new fresh work or just unsold work. 3. Artists that opted not to extend their Library Gallery have been removed from the catalogue. The beautiful body of work of spectacular paintings range in size (petite 4”x6” and as large as 48”x60”), style (contemporary to realism), and medium (oil, watercolor and pastels). I would be honored to guide you in the selection of a painting! None of this would be possible without the support of you, our Patrons, Collectors and our incredible Volunteers. Thank you, and enjoy viewing the ‘virtual’ OLMSTED GALLERY! Happy Collecting!

Chicago, IL | matbarberkennedy.com MAT BARBER KENNEDY F or over twenty years Mat has been drawing and painting aging machines, tools and buildings, constructed in layers, adapted over generations, and decaying in pieces. I’m fascinated by junctions of materials and by the corrosive relationship between designed objects and the passage of time. Occupants die or move on, put up signs and go out of business. Children throw stones and touch door frames which get dirty by the handle. Tools are used, bear scars and grow weary with the years of service. People are never directly depicted in my work but they are always present by implication.

I n 1998, Craig left her career in nursing administration to pursue her passion for painting on a full-time basis. She feels that her best expressions happen when she is on location and can directly sense the mood and atmosphere of a particular scene. Whether painting vast open areas or intimate spaces, she finds that capturing light and color is best accomplished through close observation and careful study. “I feel I am most successful when my paintings evoke an emotional response in the viewer.” In 2017, Valerie was awarded the Artists’ Choice Award in Ireland’s Art in the Open. She won the Gold Prize in Ireland’s 2013 Art in the Open. In 2016, Valerie’s painting ‘Whitewashed’ was awarded Second Prize in PleinAir Magazine’s annual Plein Air Salon. Valerie also won the Artist’s Choice/Petit Painting Award in 2019 Olmsted Plein Air. Valerie has been invited to judge national and international painting competitions, including Ireland’s Art in the Open, Floyd Plein Air, Solomons Island Plein Air and Norfolk Plein Air. Valerie has had numerous solo exhibitions and enjoys teaching landscape painting workshops in the USA and in Ireland.

Siloam Springs, AR | lasaterart.com JOHN P. LASATER IV A s a representational painter, my catalysts are nature, perception and art history. I am drawn first to the formal aspects of what is observed; characteristics like the shape of a shadow, the colors of a form, or the wonder of visibility Winner of Chris Garvin Judge Award

itself. This drives me to deeper observation so that, as George Inness urged, I “see, and not think I see.” It’s wonderful to spend a portion of my time giving back, and I hope to continue inspiring through writing and teaching; and more importantly, through a life dedicated to artistry. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, John P. Lasater IV is an award- winning artist who now lives, paints and teaches in Siloam Springs, located in the beautiful hills of Northwest Arkansas. Once known for his impressionistic style and bravado brushwork, has recently evolved under the mentorship of Jerusalem Master, Israel Hershberg, as well as from his travels to Italy and in-depth historical and experimental self-studies. His recent works have matured to a quieter, more thought out and simplistic approach, giving himself more time and focus on each painting.

Pittsburgh, PA | patrickleefineart.com PATRICK LEE P atrick Lee takes a unique creative approach to making paintings in the studio and en plein air. He draws heavily on intuition and imagination to develop an image, often altering the drawing, color, and spatial relationships to create a mood and express a feeling about the subject. This often leads to strong elements of abstraction and suggestion in his work, rather than explicit detail. This gives the viewer an opportunity to connect with each piece in their own way, inviting them to let their own imaginations make personal associations and connections.

Clarksville, MD | alisonmenke.com ALISON LEIGH MENKE A lison is a conceptual plein air impressionist. Her subjects depict the natural beauty of light in the landscape, while emphasizing the rich colors our world has to offer. The vast majority of her work is created in open air, often backpacking to remote locations, or navigating city sidewalks. Alison loves painting directly from real life and experience. Her approach stresses the importance of expressing a true sense of light and place while showcasing the qualities of oil paint and brushwork. Painting thick and thinking abstract design, she loves to use texture and color to move a viewer around her painting. Traveling is a large part of Alison’s artistic inspiration. She loves the freshness of new locations and loves to explore how much her palette changes from landscape to landscape. By no means is Alison a nomad. As far as her travels may take her – there is no place like home in Clarksville, Maryland.
