FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Saying hello to 2019 and new opportunities

launching paper No. 27 in the Greater Nashville area. What we do is not easy, but it is so worth it to bring you unbi- ased, relevant local news each and every month. I will be relocating to Nashville this month to lead our newest metro as pub- lisher. I will greatly miss The Woodlands area and all of the wonderful people who have supported us and our mission. How- ever, I am excited to share what we do in this new thriving area. Recently someone told me, “Every community should have the benefit of Community Impact Newspa- per .” Here’s to growth in 2019 and doing what we can to fulfill our mission.

I did not fully appreciate what it meant to be part of a hyperlocal news company when I joined Community Impact Newspa- per in 2012. While I received the paper at my home, it was not until I started work- ing here that I understood the difference we make in the communities we serve. We connect people. We truly believe our mission, “To help build thriving businesses and informed citizens through the collaboration of a passionate team,” is vitally important and needs to be lived out each and every day. We now have 26 papers across the states of Texas and Arizona, and I am excited to share that we will soon be

Wow! What a December for stocks. Anecdotally, I heard about a person in the accumulation phase of their investing life who sold all of their stocks and stopped their systematic investment program. That is exactly what you do NOT want to do when stocks fall in price. Indeed, that is the reason you use a systematic or dollar cost averaging program in the first place. When stock prices fall you are buying at cheaper prices. Who wouldn’t want to buy whatever it is you are buying at lower prices. Systematic investing or dollar cost averaging was made for bear markets. If you are in the accumulation phase of your investing life, not only sit back and enjoy the bear market, you actually want to root it on. By accident you’ll buy the next bottom. Enjoy! WORTHWHILE CONVERSATIONS SIMPLIFYING AND ORGANIZING IN THE NEW YEAR

How do you help people fulfill those predictable resolutions about better organized finances? “Predictable” is correct. In our 48-year history, we’ve consistently heard this goal from clients. It is logical because complicated and disorganized financial planning means stress and leads to only one result – procrastination over important decisions. The good news: just a few simple steps can result in significant improvement in your planning. For most people, it starts with preparing an up-to-date Balance Sheet that lists all of your financial accounts and assets along with all debts owed. Update this yearly as a financial discipline. An updated Balance Sheet makes sense. Where’s the simplifying? Find opportunities to simplify by consolidating assets and liabilities into a smaller number of accounts that are easier to track and manage. Over time, many families “proliferate” financial accounts which no longer make sense as a whole. Consolidating accounts makes it easier to properly manage personal finances, reducing costs and account fees. Do the same with credit cards and liability accounts. Imagine the feeling of efficiency as it becomes easier and quicker to manage accounts (auto- payments, paperless files). Also, don’t forget to protect these accounts from cyber-fraud. Use a Password Manager to organize and easily recall secure passwords.

You haven’t used the “B” word yet…What about a Budget? Our Wealth Planning Committee, a multi- disciplinary group of professionals (CPAs, JDs, and other credentialed firm members), meets to brainstorm such topics and has developed a client-centered approach. Committee Chair, Phillip Hamman, CFP ® , CFA, commented about budgets: “We should re-invent budgeting since ‘Budgeting in Reverse’ is sufficient for most – simply identify the required savings and accumulation targets, and make sure you hit those numbers.” Where can you get help? Slaying the “Organization Dragon” is more than a weekend exercise. If you need help getting things in order, talk with your financial advisor since they may have expertise. We advise people to be careful in seeking help. Choose an advisor 100% committed to the Fiduciary business model, with a legal duty to put their clients’ best interests first. This is the model we follow at Linscomb & Williams. Contact us if you would like to sit down and create an organized financial plan at our office here in The Woodlands. For more information, or a copy of our Form ADV, Part II, with all of our disclosures, call Craig Ivy or Larry Napier at 281 841 0707, or visit www.linscomb-williams.com.

J. Harold Williams, CPA/PFS, CFP ® , discusses with the L&W Woodlands team how clients can begin to develop more hassle-free and organized financial lives. (Left to right: J. Harold Williams, CPA/PFS, CFP ® , Paul Vitale (retired); Lauren Rich, CFP ® ; Larry Napier, CPA; B. Craig Ivy, AIF ® )

COUNTY

Expanded Spring Creek Greenway Nature Center to reopen by summer COMPILED BY HANNAH ZEDAKER Nearly two years after Hurricane Harvey, the Spring Creek Greenway Nature Center is slated to reopen this summer, Montgomery County Precinct 3 officials said. In August 2017, heavy rainfall from Hurricane Harvey caused Spring Creek—the southern boundary of Montgomery County—to rise out of its banks, cresting at 111.45 feet—a record level set in 1994, according to the Harris County Flood Control District. The flooding resulted in widespread destruction, including the Spring Creek Greenway Nature Center. “Approximately 4 feet of water flooded the Spring Creek Greenway Nature Center during rainstorms from Hurricane Harvey in August 2017, causing major damage and forcing its closure,” Precinct 3 spokesperson Andy DuBois said. Located adjacent to the Peckin- paugh and Spring Trails preserves, the 11,000-square-foot Spring Creek Greenway Nature Center features a community center, the Sheriff Department’s Patrol District II office, a pavilion and nature trails. The flooding from Hurricane Har- vey has left the building closed to the community for nearly two years. REBUILDING EFFORTS The Spring Creek Greenway Nature Center was not the only county build- ing affected by Hurricane Harvey. The Robinson Road Community Center in Oak Ridge North has also been closed
