Horace J. Knowles: Beyond Fairyland

283. Artist’s Sketchbook (C. 1935) c. 1935. Artist’s sketch book. Fo- lio. Decorated paste paper covered boards, with original silk ties (a cou- ple lacking). Pencil and ink sketches and studies. [33024] The contents of this sketchbook fo- cus on historical dress, beginning in the classical world and ending in the nineteenth century. The early pag- es are filled with Ancient Egyptian dress, headwear, jewellery and archi- tecture, before moving onto that of Assyria. Next is the male and female dress of Ancient Greece, including studies of soldiers, many of these loosely laid into the sketchbook. The middle section of the sketch- book is mainly unused, but the sec- ond half is largely full of sketches from the 15th to the 19th century, variously executed in pencil and ink. Elsewhere, particular attention is given to Florentine headdresses and ball gowns of the 19th century.
