IMPROVING OUR HIRING PROCESS
How We Find the Best Employees
Once upon a time, you heard about an open position with Franklin Building Supply, your position. Maybe it was through a friend, family, an online post, or a help-wanted reader board. For some who have been around for a while, it may have even been an old-school classified ad in the newspaper. Whatever way you found us, we’re glad that you did. Reflect on this for a moment. What was your hiring experience like? Who were your first contacts, what was discussed, what were your expectations of the job, and were they realized? Most importantly, when did you decide that you wanted to not just work for the company but to truly be part of Franklin, not just punching the time clock, but finding a deeper purpose in engaging your mind to creatively solve problems and drive values? The fact that you are still actively employed and engaged here means that we likely got this critical stage of your introduction to the group right. We frequently do. But all too often, we don’t. Every year we recruit, interview, onboard, and welcome dozens of employees to the team who fail to connect or otherwise thrive in our unique environment for various reasons. When we make a poor hire or fail to genuinely recognize, welcome, and engage an otherwise high-potential team member, it costs us time, energy, money, and effort that could have been spent elsewhere. Current conservative estimates put the dollar value of these failures
at an average of $7,200 per hire. Considering opportunity costs, it is likely far more. We can do better.
Fortunately, we have some of the best talents in the industry, a long and established history of exceptional service, and a great group of hiring managers to mitigate the risk. Excellence, sincerity, professionalism, and dedication to a higher purpose attract more of the same. We have a strong employee-owned culture that is unique among our competitors, and we will continue leveraging this to our advantage. We are excited to share that over the next few months, we will have a full- time HR resource dedicated to helping us develop a drastically different recruiting, screening, interviewing, and onboarding experience. This improved process will enable us to identify where to better invest our time in screening, quickly sorting out applicants that do not share our values in safety, quality, integrity, trust, innovation, and hard work. More importantly, this new quality-over-quantity approach will enable our team to invest more valuable resources to connect and mentor the new co-owner in those critical first few weeks. Giving them our best will reciprocate their best. We must see ourselves as solutions providers and sharpen our competitive advantage to increase market share. Especially in the current economic climate, we need new associates who can quickly catch the vision, find their niche, and row in sync toward a shared vision. Final Note: You are the subject-matter expert in your area and our best resource on what makes someone successful in that area. We need that advisory expertise to make our hiring process the best in the industry. Be proactive and generous with this knowledge. Thank you for providing valuable insight and feedback to our team as we work cooperatively to develop a world-class new hire experience.

APRIL HIGH FIVES!
asset to all of us. I can’t count the number of times I — and my team — have been in contact with Seth since the start of the year, and he is always eager to make himself available. While we love working with Seth, we hope to learn enough from him that we’re equipped with the tools to handle future situations that arise! We’d be worse off without you, Seth. Thanks for all you do!”
Easy From: John Moore–Jaguar To: Mitch Montgomery–Twin Falls
“ We had a couple of inches of snow last night and had 10-degree temperatures this morning, and Mitch shoveled the customer and employee parking before everyone arrived.”
Wow From: Christopher Frageorgia–Boise To: Ritchie Rodriguez–Boise
Strive From: Dale Hansen–Boise To: Eric Grant–Boise
“ I wanted to acknowledge Ritchie Rodriguez in the Boise Cabinet shop. He has always been a vital part of the process and management of the shop. Even in a time with a lot of change and implementation of new machinery along with the day-to-day running of the cabinet shop and adjusting to how things are done, he is still on top of questions and comments put on Trello. Whether tagged in the note or not, he has some of the highest diligence I’ve seen in a coworker. He remains very responsive, coordinating who needs to respond or finding the answer himself. I believe he is a crucial part of the process and the shop. He is a prime example of an owner who cares about his work, employees, and Franklin. We all have one common goal each day, and he makes it easier to reach the goal. I appreciate Ritchie’s determination and the attitude he carries every day. High Five!”
“ I wanted to give Eric Grant a high five. As we have transitioned to Treasure Valley Install, Eric has taken the initiative on the product control side of Cabinets. He has made implementations to streamline processes and monitoring within systems that we were already using. The capability to fully utilize what is at our fingertips has improved tracking and will substantially impact the quality of the shop. Eric strives to be better in his position and has positive effects on every person he works with.”
Safe From: Brian Tucker–Boise To: Steven Prophet–Boise
“ I would like to High Five Steven Prophet for inspecting and finding a defective trailer hitch before transferring a cabinet trailer from one location to another. Several recent incidents have involved trailer hitches that have broken in the hitch assembly, not allowing it to latch onto the hitch ball. Steven recognized that the hitch had a broken pin, and by identifying this problem, Steven saved the company from a potentially dangerous situation that could have caused severe injuries.”
Guide From: Jordan Paeth–Boise To: Seth Higginson–Jaguar
“ I want to shout out Seth Higginson for consistently and patiently guiding his internal customers (all employees) through challenging scenarios and situations. Seth always makes time for the employee- owners of FBS, and his HR experience is undoubtedly a valuable
ACHIEVING THE GOLD STANDARD Holding Each Other Accountable
The introduction of LEAN/Continuous Improvement concepts in the Caldwell Yard has proven invaluable. Implementing these concepts has been sustained through multiple yard managers, and the employees have recognized that “fixing what bugs you” is not just a slogan. When put into practice, it can improve the work environment, increase productivity without increasing effort, and make the workplace safer and more enjoyable. These LEAN principles have
from yard managers and front-line employees, and because of their efforts, it has become a habit for most employees in the yard. Yard employees at all levels hold one another accountable when the high standards for organization and cleanliness are not maintained. There is a degree of self-policing in place that I believe is unique. Yard employees are encouraged to actively participate in improving processes and procedures, and most of the best ideas for improvements come from the bottom up, not top down. We are all aware that we are still in the infant stage of this never-ending journey, but when I take a walk through “their yard,” I could not be prouder of my Caldwell yard team for the pride they take in their work environment and constantly putting forth the effort to improve and fix what bugs them.
empowered our yard team to think and act like employee-owners. This has been achieved not just through training, but it has manifested with the buy-in from our yard employees. Having a LEAN culture

In the Spotlight
One of our most significant core values here at Franklin Building Supply is caring for our valued clients. We are committed to delivering the best possible customer experience, which requires placing a large amount of trust and faith in our team members. When it comes to Larry Dille, our inside sales associate at our Gooding, Idaho location, that part is easy! Larry has been with us for three and a half years, and we couldn’t be more fortunate to have him as a team member. While tracking inventory, ordering supplies, ensuring operations run smoothly, and maintaining customer satisfaction, Larry keeps our work environment happy and upbeat. He’s always a pleasure to be around! LEAN, a series of five principles designed to improve workplace efficiency, helps Larry to restock at just the right level. It can be easy to order too much or too little of a product accidentally, but IN THE SPOTLIGHT Larry Dille Makes Every Day a Great Day
with Larry on the job, we trust his instinct and knowledge and know there’s nothing to worry about. In 1991, Larry received a bone marrow transplant that worked wonders for his health. Now, his primary motivation in life is seeing and playing with his grandchildren before and after they go to school, and he goes to work. He loves fishing, hunting, riding ATVs, or even canning jam in his spare time. Larry, we thank you for being an integral part of Franklin Building Supply and working so hard to always put the needs of our customers first. You are a joy to work with!
