Introduction Extended School Year (ESY) services are provided when children with disabilities have unique needs and require special education and related services that extend beyond the regular academic year. These children have disabilities that are likely to continue indefinitely or for a prolonged period. Interruption of their educational programming may cause regression and when coupled with limited recoupment capacity, render it impossible or unlikely that the child with disabilities will attain the level of self- sufficiency and independence that would otherwise be expected in view of the disabling condition. ESY services are only provided for those areas on the current Individualized Education Program (IEP) where the child has met the above conditions. The lack of clear evidence of such factors may not be used to deny ESY if the IEP team determines the need for such a program and includes ESY in the IEP. The provision of ESY is not limited to particular categories of disability; or unilaterally limited to a type, amount, or duration of services.
