E dward Pygatt (Alpha Kappa 1950) entered the Chapter Invisible on July 3, 2021, less than a week from his 96th birth- day. Pygatt was born on July 8, 1925, to Lemuel G. and Fannie Pygatt in Effingham, SC. After two years of high school, the U.S. Army drafted Pygatt in 1944 and he completed basic training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, SC. Pygatt was to the newly commissioned 643rd Port Company Transportation Corps, a “negro” supply company deployed to the European Theatre and the Pacific Theatre, respec- tively, during World War II. After serving in the military for three years and earning his honorably discharge, Pygatt returned to high school, where he graduated in 1948. He attended North Carolina College for Negroes (now North Carolina Central University) in Durham, NC, where he earned in 1952 a B.S. degree in chemistry. In 1956, Pygatt earned a

doctorate in veterinary medicine from Tuskegee Institute (now University). Upon graduating from Tuskegee, Pygatt moved to Portland, OR, where he worked for 15 years at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). In 1958, he was appointed Oregon Deputy State Vet- erinarian on May 1, 1958. In 1972, Pygatt opened a small animal clinic hospital in Long Beach, CA, and operated the Spring Street Animal Hospital for 30 years. Pygatt was a lifetime member of the NAACP, National Urban League, American Veterinary Medical Association, American Animal Hospital Association, and the South- ern California Veterinary
Medical Association. He was also a former president of the Tuskegee Veterinary Medical Association. Pygatt was an active member at Calvary Baptist Church of Compton in Compton, CA. Brother Edward Pygatt was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Tami Dankaro; twin sister Edna (Luther) Bradley; brothers Samuel (Gladys), Lemuel (Arteal), Harry (Lillian), and Fred; brothers-in- law, Luther Bradley, and John “Johnny Bean.” He is survived by his wife of 62 years, the former Iris Carter; daughter, Jacquelyn (Timothy) Armstrong; son-in-law, Yusufu Dankaro; sisters, Helen McElveen, Mary (Harold) Pinckney, and Mildred Pygatt. ♦
