Love of the Game Auctions Spring 2023 Premier Auction

13. 1888 N403 Yum Yum Tobacco Tom Deasley - SGC EX 5 - Highest Graded!

14. Scarce 1911-16 T216 People’s Tobacco (Kotton) Christy Mathewson (HOF - Small Print) - SGC VG/EX 4

Something of an anomaly, T216s share images with the E90-1 and E92 caramel sets and are part of a trio of card issues dubbed “Louisiana issues,” so named for their state of origin. The People’s Tobacco Company of New Orleans was the producer, the set is rife with variations and known for its complexity and scarcity. Mathewson, one of 74 subjects in the set, can be found in several variations, in this case the “small print” variety with the “Never Go Out” Factory 4 back. SGC has assigned this card a technical grade of VG/EX 4, a well-centered example with a clean surface and excellent centering. Some visible age- related foxing is apparent on the card front; with some light edge and corner

Truly high-quality portrait card from the rare N403 Yum Yum Tobacco issue, issued by August Beck & Co. of Chicago. The cards were distributed in packs of smoking and chewing tobacco, and featured either photographic portraits or action drawings of players from the National League teams, plus the Brooklyn American Association club. This example pictures Washington catcher Tom Deasley, the highest-graded of three examples assessed by SGC (none by PSA). The photographic image is bold, with strong contrast and virtually none of the fading common to 19th Century photographic issues. The reverse is clean. A tremendous opportunity for an advanced collector two obtain a truly special card. MINIMUM BID: $1,000

chipping also visible. Though just two examples have been graded higher by SGC and PSA combined, the numerical grade is essentially meaningless, with fewer than 20 examples graded between the two companies. An extraordinary card from a tremendously scarce issue. MINIMUM BID: $3,500
