From the President by Paul Miller, President, Board of Governors

Wednesday, December 6 is the Ladies’ Holiday Luncheon, and the Club is sponsoring Casa Esperanza as our charity of the year. Casa Esperanza is a transitional home for women that have children under the age of 14. Casa Esperanza provides a place to live for 18 months and many support programs for these families. The organizers of the Luncheon are looking for sponsors for items for the day. A few of the donations for the families so far are 12 family trips to the California Living Museum, and trips to the Bakersfield Symphony. If you would like further information on the event scheduled for Wednesday, you can contact Diana Prather or Maryanne McBee, or just call the Club. The Member/Member golf tournament was held last Saturday and was a great event for everyone who participated. Congratulations to Blaine Neptune and Mike Horack for winning the low net with a score of 126, and Randy Byon and Scott Bourelle for winning the low gross with a score of 136. A special thanks

It’s hard to believe that the Christmas Season is upon us! I hope that everyone is looking forward to great times with family and friends at the Club this month. The- re are several events at the Club that I’d like to highlight. The Brunch with Santa was very well attended! I believe just over 600 hundred members and their guests enjoyed the day, in total. Thanks to everyone who helped organize what turned out to be a very successful event. The Club is going all out this year with a big New Year’s Eve event. The night will include a live band, a great light show, Heavy Appetizers and Pizza at 11. A special thanks to Governors Kyle Wigley and Clare Gilliam and the House and Social Committee for really turning it up a notch this year! I hope many members are able to attend what promises to be a great evening.

goes out to the entire Seven Oaks Staff for bringing together all the elements that made the event so successful, and to the Golf and Greens Committee for all their work planning the event. construction projects in the City. The plans for all remodels and/or alterations to buildings must be submitted to the Building Department for approval. The Club’s additions to the Grand Island Gym and the remodel/expansion of the Mixed Grille are included in this requirement. The Building Department’s electronic submittal system is not working properly, which is effecting the approval process for new projects and creating significant delays. The City is working with its software vendor to remedy the issue(s), but there is currently no time frame for resolution of the matter. I will keep the membership posted as I receive further information. by Tom Lipscomb, Director of Argonomy

I wanted to take a minute to talk about our winter overseeding. It is taking longer than normal to fill-in and I’m not very excited about it. It has improved greatly, but it is still not as far along as I would expect. I’ve made several calls to the supplier and breeder, along with another club that uses Perennial Ryegrass to over-seed their fairways. Both the supplier and breeder said they have received many calls from Superintendents in the western portions of the country concerning slower establishment this year, regardless of whether it was Perennial or Intermediate Ryegrass. The one consistent observation each club reported to the supplier and breeder is that the Bermudagrass continued to actively grow much later into the fall, causing a delay in the establishment of the Ryegrass overseeding. We are experiencing a similar situation here. If you look at our fairways today you can still see green bermudagrass, but I think now the Bermudagrass has slowed enough to allow the Ryegrass to continue its establishment process. In the meantime, we are continuing to seed any slower growing or thin areas of establishment and we are fertilizing the fairways every ten days to help hasten their establishment. The good news is that I do see a lot of Ryegrass coming up in thinner areas now that the Bermudagrass has stopped its growth. I also see a lot of new germination in the areas we have seeded twice. We appreciate your patience during this time, and I feel confident that the Ryegrass establishment should move much quicker now and we will soon have a very nice playing surface.
