A NOTE FROM SYLVIA
Happy New Year to you and yours. When a new year begins, one tradition is to make a resolution to do something different in the new year. We are proud to share with our members that TPT’s resolution is to implement our new four-year strategic roadmap, which will advance our commitment to high-quality, accessible public media programming and services. As I approach my second anniversary at TPT as its President & CEO, I could never have anticipated the hardships our community would face in 2020 and 2021. Despite the uncertainty, our TPT team has continued to weather the storm, and we are prepared to leap forward, from both a content and a technology standpoint, to better serve our audiences and grow our influence among public media organizations nationally. To kick off the new year, TPT has launched a four-year strategic roadmap that focuses on six goals: Create welcoming and inclusive environments; increase representational diversity; accelerate operational excellence; grow revenue for strategic priorities; engage audiences with valued, trusted, accessible, and personalized programming; and advance a data- first culture. While ambitious, we will transform our programming and services locally, regionally and nationally. In addition to increasing our use of technology to improve access and meet audience expectations, we will also invest in TPT’s storytelling across our core content areas: history, arts and culture, public and civic affairs, and education. For additional details on our strategic roadmap, please see our categories of note (highlighted on the next two pages) or read more at tpt.org/2030 . Our work takes resources, and we are fortunate to have longstanding and dedicated members, donors, foundations and business partners who believe in our mission, programming and community. Their trust and investment in TPT and our community has, does, and will continue to support our innovation and growth. Thank you.
Best Regards, Sylvia Strobel President and CEO, Twin Cities PBS

How My Parachute Took 75 Years to Drop in Normandy By Deborah L. Jacobs
"It is a very beautiful historic piece and its packaging is very pretty," wrote the museum's curator, Eric Belloc, in response to the photos I sent. Opened in 1964, the museum has expanded its collection through public and private donations. On view in one pavilion is a C-47: a military transport plane that dropped parachutists during the D-Day attack. In another, visitors can walk through the only original Waco glider on display in Europe. The museum owns about 50 parachutes. The Airborne Museum plans to keep our parachute in storage for two or three years until the museum completes a renovation of its Waco Pavilion. The parachute can't be displayed fully opened, Mallet told us, because parachutes "are too big and would lose their shape." But it could be exhibited, in a special case, partially unfurled, with the original carton beside it.
While grounded during the pandemic, one of my projects was to find a worthy recipient for a red World War II nylon/cotton parachute that had been sitting in my Brooklyn, N.Y. basement for 22 years. The parachute, in its original carton and never used, was previously in the attic of my parents' house in the Bronx when they bought the place "as is" in 1967. About a year after my father died in 1997, my mother sold the house and, while cleaning out 30 years of detritus, showed up on my stoop with this bulky, 27-pound bundle.
She announced that she was passing the torch to me, to preserve the parachute "for history." Envisioning the day when we, too, might need to downsize, my husband and I recently decided it was time to hand off our red inheritance to the pros.
So, I contacted several museums that might, for various reasons, want to add our parachute to their collection.
The one that showed the greatest interest was the Airborne Museum in Sainte-Mère-Église, the first French town liberated by the Allies on June 6, 1944.
Knowing his plans satisfied every secret wish. This meant that as many as 100,000 visitors per year would see our parachute. And finally, it would be out of the box. Read more of this story on Next Avenue.org

Overcoming Unconscious Age Bias: An Expert’s Advice By Richard Eisenberg
Do you think that we all have unintentional bias, or that most people do? I think that most people are at risk of reacting in ways that can be influenced by stereotypes and associations. But I also think that we're all capable of practicing a little bit more introspection and developing more awareness of our own reactions and our own mental processes. Some people talk about ageism as the last 'ism.' We all know that racism is bad, that sexism is bad, but a lot of people haven't come to terms with ageism. Do you think there's some merit to that?
Editor’s Note: Next Avenue editor Richard Eisenberg spoke recently with science and culture journalist Jessica Nordell about her new book “ The End of Bias: A Beginning. ”
Next Avenue: Tell me what unconscious bias is.
I think so. Ageism is one category where in some ways it's still kind of acceptable to be somewhat biased. Culturally, it doesn't evoke the kind of shame and public approbation or renunciation that other kinds of biases do.
Jessica Nordell: We might think of ourselves as treating everyone the same. We believe that the old and young should be treated with respect. We believe men and women should be both given the same benefit of the doubt. We believe people of all races and ethnicities should be evaluated fairly. But then because we have so many stereotypes and associations embedded in our memories, we can react in ways that really violate those deeply held values. And when it's pointed out to people, they often feel very guilty. They feel embarrassed because their behavior is not in line with the kind of image of themselves that they have.
Why?
I could make guesses about the fact that we generally don't have the kind of veneration of elders that we really should— that so many other cultures have. There's so much wisdom that has accumulated and is untapped. And if we really respected our elders and respected that wisdom, I think we would all be a lot better off as a result. ‘That Got Weird’ Gets Animated About Microaggressions By Marissa Blahnik
“I worry all the time during my interviews if I’m being racist by asking certain questions to individuals,” filmmaker Sergio Mata’u Rapu said of his interview process for That Got Weird , a new animated digital series from Twin Cities PBS. “This is a good and really big learning voyage for me, making this series.” That Got Weird premieres this month as part of the Racism Unveiled digital storytelling project. The online series of short videos pairs audio interviews of Minnesota’s BIPOC community (Black, Indigenous, people of color) with animated characters to depict their experiences with tokenism, microaggressions and racism in general. Since the project launched in July 2020, Racism Unveiled has focused on the roots of racial injustice in Minnesota using video interviews, data journalism, articles, listening sessions and events. An animated series might not seem a natural extension of this work — especially one hoping to reach an adult BIPOC audience — but after an extensive period of research and development, Rapu and the Racism Unveiled team settled on the visual style for the anonymity it allows. “We wanted to hide the identity of the individuals that were sharing with us so that they felt open to share their true experiences without fear of backlash or embarrassment, or of others involved — or any of those things that comes with talking about the truth,” he said. Animation also introduces the opportunity for levity, which the team hopes will help make the subject matter more accessible.
“The goal behind it is for BIPOC individuals or people who have experienced racism in the past to connect with the series,” Rapu said, “but also to allow those who haven’t to empathize with those who have.”
Mychal Batson's characters bring levity to uncomfortable conversations.
Telling Stories That Matter
Rapu came to TPT last year to work with TPT producer Leya Hale on Bring Her Home , a feature-length project that revolves around three women who have been fighting for healing and resolution amidst the epidemic of missing and murdered Indigenous women. His work was previously seen on PBS in 2020 when Eating Up Easter , the film he created with his wife, Elena Rapu, premiered as part of Independent Lens . The film balances the history and culture of Rapa Nui, otherwise known as Easter Island, against the complications of a booming tourism industry – an intensely personal story to Rapu, who hails from Rapa Nui. But storytelling through emotion, he believes, is essential to break down barriers economically, socially and racially. By using film to highlight the diversity of life, he hopes to inspire resolutions.

“Whenever I see a film of a Pacific Islander, I feel more grounded in my experience and my existence on this planet. Whenever we're able to center BIPOC voices and stories, I think ultimately even though those stories may be hurtful in themselves and telling things that are difficult, in the end it helps to support the fact that it's not just you. It's not just you and your experience. It's not just you, that you felt weird during that conference call. This is bigger, right? This is an issue in the way life is built and structured.” Drawing It Together As production for That Got Weird wraps up, Rapu is working to film his final few interviews and edit the often- hour-long conversations down into five-minute impactful exchanges, which will then be animated. He has partnered with illustrator Mychal Batson, known artistically as Myc Dazzle, to design the characters that will populate That Got Weird . Batson currently resides in Texas, but grew up in the Rondo neighborhood of St. Paul. “Myc is really creative and he jumped on board wanting to explore something that he’s never done before and I’ve never done before and just kind of take a chance creatively,” Rapu said. “His characters look fun and exciting, which is not necessarily something that you would picture when you think about a series on racism. I think that juxtaposition is what he brings to all of this, and I know he’s super aware that these conversations may get into not-so-happy stuff and that’s important. I think he’s open to the full range of what this can be.”
Designing the characters is a multi-step process, with the interview subjects first identifying a few key characteristics they want to see in their illustrated anonymous figures, including gender identity, skin tone, and hair style or head covering. Then those details, along with an audio-only version of their interview, are shared with Batson, to avoid any potential for bias. Batson then creates the illustration, along with specific anchor points and triggers that Rapu can animate. The final elements include a title design by TPT designer Ben Malley, some sound effects by audio engineer Terry Gray and a few surprises still under wraps. “I hope audiences that watch this feel empowered to just share their story,” Rapu said. “And even if they don't want to, to know that racism impacts everyone and it's not okay that that happens. But the more of us that see that, maybe the more we feel like a bigger part of a group instead of just individuals.”
